I'm currently looking at these 2 different sets which thanks to the Samsung being on sale are of almost equal price. I'm having a hard time deciding between the two.

The issue is that I know the Panasonic is the better quality set but for around the same price I should be able to get the Samsung which is 58" vs 50". Is the Panasonic THAT much better that it completely negates the size difference compared to the Samsung. I saw the Samsung on display and the colour saturation looked very nice but I couldn't tell anything else about it from the content on display.

Ok I went to the store and played several titles of my own on both screens. The Panasonic is noticeably better than the Samsung but it's very hard to get over the size difference between the two. I just don't know if I can keep myself at 50" after years of watching that size. The thing about the Samsung is it seems sort of fuzzy. Is this something others have noticed or likely something with the display model?

Also my current set is a LCD rear projection Sony 50" Grand WEGA, specifically the KF50we620. It's about 4-5 years old. While there is an obvious quality improvement when viewing the sets in the store over what I have these things are hard to tell without seeing things side by side. What kind of improvement in quality would you say I would be looking at when going from my 5yr old Grand WEGA to either of these new sets (the Samsung OR the Pany). What would I be gaining and what if anything might I be loosing? Black levels, standard def content etc etc...?

Cliffs:

The immediate impact of the larger screen is REALLY nice. But the Panasonic seems to have the better picture quality. Which one to choose?:(

I disagree that Panasonics are better. I've seen a lot of problems with the Panasonic TH50s and even the Th58s in the past. If you were comparing to a Pioneer...

I'd go with the Samsung 58"

How far will you be sitting from the screen?

About 9-10 feet. Room is pitch black when viewing movies.
That far away you need the extra screen size. Go with the Samsung.

Yeah I'm slowly coming to that conclusion myself.

Yeah, I'm about 5 ft. away from a 52" 1080 Sony LCD and I think thats *just* perfect.

At 10ft. I'd definitely be doing the 58".

I've never heard anyone say that they wished they had bought a smaller TV :p (Well, except a guy I work with, but then he can't tell a difference between his stretched DirecTV SD signal and an OTA HDTV signal on his 42" TV)
