I just picked one of these up since I didn't want to bring my other full size camera to college. This is one of the only compacts in its price range with full manual modes, and the 5x Leica Zoom lens goes from 32mm (moderate wide angle) to 160mm (moderate telephoto). A very useful range!

The lens also has Panasonic's optical image stabliizatoin system that lets you use slower shutter speeds than without it (up to 1/6 second if held steady)

This one also has the Venus IV image processor (Think Canon's Digic)...the Venus IV is supposed to be better at applying noise reduction, so high ISO shots turn out better.

Continuous drive mode offers 2.5 FPS at full resolution with a limit of either 7 images (standard comperssion) or 4 images (fine compression). Unlimited burst mode lets you shoot at full resolution with fine compression at 2 FPS up to card capacity. Also offers a 2.5 MP high speed burst mode that shoots at 5.5-6 FPS for around 30 images.

Shoots Quicktime video at up to 848x480 30 FPS. Image stabilization works during videos to prevent shake.

Runs on AA batteries, with a rated life of 450+ Shots on a set of $5 high capacity NiMH rechargables.

Price is about $127 shipped+12% MS Cash Back

Here's a video of this camera's continuous drive mode. It offers three: the first one is 2.5 to 3 FPS at full resolution, the second is 2 FPS at full resolution until the limit of the card is reached, and the second one is 5.5 FPS at 2.5 Megapixels. I don't know of any other non-Panasonic point and shoot that offers that kind of continuous shooting capability at this price range. Even the $500 Canon G9 only manages 1.5 FPS at full resolution.

Very nice for the price as are other Panasonic cameras. They have come a long way. Take a look at the TZ series with 10X optical Leica lenses. Terrific.

Nice find

The Panasonic is smaller than your Canon but still takes 2 AA batteries; it's closer to the size of the Canon SD series. Both cameras have the same 1/2.5" sensor size, so ISO performance should be similar.

The Panasonic has a better (higher resolution) 2.5" screen, 230,000 pixels to the Canon's 172,000. While the Panasonic only has a 5x optical zoom compared to your Canon's 10x, it has better wide angle coverage. The Panasonic's zoom starts at 32mm vs the Canon's 36mm. This will allow you to fit more into a picture, useful when shooting a large group of people or a landscape.

The Panasonic also has better continuous shooting performance. The Canon is only capable of 1.3 FPS, while the Panasonic is capable of 2.5 FPS (full resolution) or 5.5 FPS (2.5 megapixels).

The Panasonic also offers marginally better video resolution, since it can shoot 30 FPS at 848x480 compared to the Canon's 640x480.
