Actually the best 2MP camera around was the Olypmus 2100UZ 10x Image Stabilized Zoom. I played with this camera and it's HUGE. Take a normal 3x zoom camera and double the size of it. The lens is also gigantic (of course), but I was worried about scratching the lens since it sticks out so far. You need a tripod to zoom out otherwise your 12x shots will be blurry (no matter how steady your hands are). Low light performance is so-so, but outdoor shots are outstanding. If you're into bird watching or scenery photography, this is a great camera (though I'd recommend the 2100UZ more). If you want a big zoom everyday camera, look elsewhere.

I can't believe I got this on Hot Deal 4 months ago for $250.00 and now look at this deal!

This camera rocks! It too has Image Stablization and a full set of Leica lenses inside. 12x optical zoom and a 3x digital zoom make this baby very sweet! It has a threaded lens ring for addons and a rechargeable battery too! The features of this camera make it an awesome deal. Another thing, you can hack the firmware of the FZ1 with the FZ2 and get more features and image quality. This is a pro-user camera, NOT a pocket camera, and is quite a joy to have.

For more info read the Panasonic DMC-FZ1 and FZ2 FAQ and Tips
You can get info on the firmware upgrade there!

Thank you PicPoc. Just placed my order. Hot, Hot deal. For anyone who has doubts about this camera just go to the Panasonic forum at dpreview.com. I've been reading & dreaming about that 12x stabilized zoom for months. Now I can finally afford.

i bought this from viking for 260 shipped (230 + tax) several months ago. It is unfortunate that it's only 2.1mp, but unless youre regularly printing pictures larger than 5x7, it works out fine. Optical zoom, to me, is like money-- it's hard to have too much. There are plenty of times when I'm VERY glad to have the zoom because things are just too far away. I'd much rather have a 2.1mp 12x optical than a 5mp, 3x optical. I use the zoom much more than i print huge pictures. The image quality on this camera is also very good. At 169, it's a steal.

Hi,
Thanks for the heads up. I just placed my order (so quickly that I forgot to use the promo - trying to get that applied to my order now). I have the Olympus UZ2100 and love the 10X zoom. My mom also has an UZ but hers has been giving her grief so this may be a nice replacement for her. I'll have to see which one I like better (she gets the hand me down).

Thanks Again,
Ken

shoot..i bought tihs camera months ago for $270.

gah.....now its $100 less and i dont really need another one. what i need is a tiny pocketable camera for <$200. something to take to parties and stuff.

the zoom is super nice. the image stabilization is icing.

low light capability is average.

2mp is bummer

Darn...just tried to order it and is already in back order status. Just like last time when Outpost cleared these out at $200. I missed that deal by minutes. Another example of the "AT effect".

I don't really need a new camera (I have a Nikon 8700 and Canon A70, already) but these are supposed to be so much fun to just snap pics. At $179, you can't go wrong.

Holy Moley!

This deal is scorching! Too bad I already bought one at the then (still) amazing price of $250 shipped.
I didn't follow the links up above where someone mentioned "FZ2" -- but I'll say this camera is flashable to the FZ-2 via firmware floating around the net. I flashed mine, and it works perfectly. The FZ2 upgrade adds aperture and shutter controls, and also a few others (i forget the details). The aperture controls added make this thing worth 3X the money.
This definately is not a "compact" camera -- but it's not as huge as some make it sound. It's the size of a normal 35mm cam w/zoom.
Also, someone up above said a tripod is needed for 12X zoom.... I don't think that's true: I've zoomed out to 12X hand-held just fine with no noticable blurriness. Maybe I have steady hands....
For non-stabilized cameras, I can't keep the subject in the view-finder when zoomed out over 8x... so I don't think I'm extrordinarly steady.
I'm assuming the poster way up above turned IS on... :)

I have absolutely no complaints about this camera. Color and clarity are superb. Image stabilization is excellent.

At $250, this camera was such a deal that I get excited about it.... At $170 I don't know what I'd do...

I'm pretty sure I have the md5 checksum of the flash file. IM me if you need it/can't find it elsewhere.

One thing for the peeps getting in on this deal....

be sure to snag one of the SecureDigital card deals, cuz the 8MB card that comes with this camera is a joke. 8 whole pics before you're out of room.

I'd recommend the 256mb card... or larger, since prices are falling like a rock on those things.
The camera has a video-record mode, so you could record for quite a long while with the big SD cards.

somehow, this deal just got even hotter... (for first-time viking buyers)

I just got a viking office products catalog in the mail and it says on the front:

"Get this sleek portable TV/radio FREE with your first order of $25 or more!"
"Just ask for Y11-PR1416B when you place your order."

It's a silver, modern'ish looking 5" black and white mini-tv
includes AC adapter AND car adapter; or uses C batteries (not included)
