BestBuy has the Panasonic DVD-RP62S progressive scan DVD player on sale for $129.99. The regular price is $179.99, so it's a pretty nice sale. I'm not sure how long the sale is supposed to last. You can also order it online and get free shipping.

What makes this a really good deal is that this DVD player uses the Faroudja chip for progressive scan, so it has some of the best quality video out there. Clearly much better than anything in this price range.

To make things even better, my local BestBuy had an open box one for $100, so I picked that one up. I hooked it up and the image quality is absolutely gorgeous. Light years ahead of the crappy Cyber Home.

The only two drawbacks is that it doesn't have Dolby Digital or DTS decoders (I don't care, I use my receiver for that), and it only has an optical audio out, no coaxial connection. All in all, an excellent quality progressive scan DVD player without a ton of bells and whistles. Exactly what I was looking for :)

Bah... doesn't play JPEG discs. I'll stick with Pioneer.

EDIT: You're probably right, thanks. :D I have a big mouth... :p

I bought this in December at BB. Will they pricematch their own new price? Their policy says
In-Store Price Guarantee ? If, within 30 days (14 days for computers, monitors, printers and notebooks, camcorders, digital cameras and radar detectors) of your purchase from Best Buy, you find a local competitor offering a lower price on an available product of the same brand and model, we'll refund the difference plus another 10% of the difference. Bring us verification of the lower price, plus your original Best Buy receipt to claim your refund. Does not apply to BestBuy.com pricing, special, bonus or free offers, and in California cellular phones and pagers. Does not apply to products with special financing offers. For complete price guarantee details, please see a customer service representative. We reserve the right to limit quantities. See store for complete details.

There shouldn't be a problem. Just take your receipt into the store. Good luck!

I'm actually co-oping at STMicroelectronics where we're developing the code for the 2003 Pioneer player. It's pretty darn cool. :D

OK, then. Make sure they leave a "back door" in the code so we can re-write the firmware to make it perform like we want it to. ;)

CK,

you might not want to post that kind of info around here. most companies like to keep clients/outsourcers/projects confidential. i know i've had to sign ndas about not discussing just a list of clients. just a thought...

Your TV needs to support 480p (progressive) as opposed to 480i (interlaced). In general only HD-compliant TVs can display progressive video signals. In fact, many HD rear projection TVs display everything as 1080i. They simply upconvert all video signals (480i, 480p, 720p) to 1080i.

not to thread crap, but on eBay there are like 20 of these going for a buy-it-now price of about $110-115.

What makes this hot is the $25 rebate that nobody has mentioned.

here

Don't forget to use a 10% off coupon that ends today......

Panasonic will give you 5 free Blockbuster rentals with the purchas of this player here

Buying something from eBay for $115 and paying $15 to ship it as opposed to buying it from a trusted retailer like BB is a no-brainer. Also, the 15 or so you talk about for $115 on eBay are used.....

Many, many thanks, amdi! I was just at BB looking for a good deal on a DVD player, and I overlooked this there. Figured I'd come here to see what I might have missed there. Heh, it payed off. The specs and price are exactly what I'm looking for. Man, I love this forum.

Damn, I bought it a week too early (though I did get it for $130 + tax). I wish I could have gotten in on the 10% off and $25 rebate. Anyway, Best Buy is NOT a trusted retailer. In fact, I will never buy from them again and will recommend everyone I know to boycott them. They tried to sell me a refurbished player (had a dent, crack, scratches, parts loose on the inside). When I went to return it, they didn't even bat an eye, as if they were expecting it. To top it off, my CC was charged TWICE and when I called their customer service, I found out they are all complete morons. They kept transferring me back and forth, not knowing who is responsible for what. I'm going to go to BB tomorrow to get it all sorted out.

Nice deal. I've been wanting to replace my trusty old Panny A120 with a progressive Faroudja chip model for some time now. Couldn't pass this up. :)

But why did I get charged SALES TAX online?! is that supposed to happen? I don't recall getting charged sales tax when I buy online but maybe it's because we have a Best Buy in my state (RI). Hmm....

Anyway, thanks for the deal.

The $25 rebate only applies to bestbuy.com online purchases, not B&M purchases. I thought I was going to get a killer deal using my 10% coupon in store with the $25 rebate, but no go. Both the rebate form and a rebate specialist at best buy confirmed that the rebate is only good with online purchases.

So if I bought the DVD player online and went to the store for pickup, do I qualify for the rebate? (I'm thinking about Photoshopping my receipt =) )
