all you guys are right on the money. this happened to me last nite with this bonehead cashier--when she scanned it, it said "new price", she said she would have to check (LOL). i figured it was a lock, so i went to check the endcaps for other bargains in the meantime... come back and she talkin about "i found the price and it's $279.99(the tag on the shelf :p), do you want to buy it?" i yelled "naw" and stormed off. please dude, print the sku so i can break dese foos off something...
well, anyway, i got 2 dc memory cards(the 800 bloks) each for $7.44, and mtv music generator for $5.94, so i got something--nyahanahanayh target

I think we've been abandoned.

I'm betting that it was a one time deal and the guy probably just got lucky.

Now that the thread showed back up.......When I was making the phone calls, two of the stores told me they sent the sets back because they were not selling. After my cross-town fiasco, I assumed that they were sent back because they did not sell at the $299 price.

The one I saw had a really beat up box and was the only one they had. I'm thinking the stock itself may be regional, and that they did not stock much of the higher end players around the Detroit-Metro area.

Oh, well.

As to the 860, time will tell as to the rebate--will I be vindicated? HMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm:)

I found one at my local Target - the display model. No box, cables, manual or remote. I
tried using my Cinema 7 universal remote. I could get it to Play/Stop/Pause/NextChapter/PrevChapter using the Cinema 7. Another universal remote
might work better. You can also order the original remote from Panasonic for 24.97.

I really don't need this player because i already have a Tosh 5109 progressive player.

If anyone out there wants it, I'll sell it for what I've got in it, plus shipping. Otherwise, it goes back to Target. You can email me at rickforrest@mindspring.com

FWIW, this player was on clearance at my local Target (Turnersville NJ) for $149 also, but I passed on it.. it was the floor model, with no accessories.

Atrac,

I don't know if your comment

<< I think we've been abandoned. I'm betting that it was a one time deal and the guy probably just got lucky >>

was directed at me but at least 6 or 7 folks in this thread have seen these for $149.

I stated right from the very beginning that "mileage varies". So enough bitchin and moaning! If the deal doesn't work for you then move on and find another deal. I scanned the receipt for you just before I logged on to check this thread but after reading the tone here I don't think my effort would be appreciated.

And that's about all I've got to say about this deal!

Hey Rebuilder,

I certainly didn't mean to get your temper flaring. I appreciate that you took the time to scan the receipt and can understand you not wanting to post it now.

Anyway, thanks and good luck to you on some other hot deals.

:)
