Panasonic DMC FZ1K (2M) better than Canon A70?

The Panasonic one is only 2M, but with 12x optical zoom and Leica lens. $300

Canon A70: $250 something

Is it a better choice than A70?

There's no way to tell just from specs, you're going to need reviews & sample pics.

It appears to be a pretty good camera. The 12x zoom would be nice.

It also focuses down to 5cm in macro mode, pretty impressive for a cam that can zoom so much.

Interesting.

I am betting that the A70 will take better pics overall, though.

Yeah. BTW, if you get the FZ1k you can upgrade the firmware to make it a FZ2k, which has more manual controls. Just FYI.

Yes.

The 4x6 prints I've had printed using my 2MP A60 are excellent. They're crisper on print than they look on your monitor(at roughly a similar physical size).

We don't know how good the lens on the Panasonic is though.
 
Should be much better than A70 since it's leica.

I read about this upgrade but didn't hear any information about what it actually does. Are you sure it gives you manual controls? BTW, it can't be "more" manual controls since the FZ1K doesn't have any manual controls at all!
 
Edit: 3MP FZ1S in newegg, not 4MP. Sorry.

Thank you Ross. I know they are different since one is 3MP the other is 2MP, the price difference is only $50 now. So that's why I want a comparison.

Newegg has a 4MP FZ1 for $330, which is much better than A70. But I already placed order for 2MP FZ1 and it's shipped 30 minutes ago.

As for firmware upgrade, I think I will hold on a while.

I honestly wasn't paying that much attention to the details as I was looking for info about the FZ10K and someone mentioned it briefly (at Steve's Digicam forums). You can probably get more info there.

Well the modes are gimmicks...but the new 8.0 apeture is nice, even though max shutter speed is 'only' 1/2000 instead of 1/2500. The movie mode is still only 3 minutes per clip.

LCD increases from 1.5" to 1.8" also which is a little nicer. I liked my larger LCD 2.0" on my A50 and was a little disappointed that a nicer camera had a smaller LCD for no apparent reason. The CCD is still the same 1/2.7 inch unit.
