I don't know if it will work that way. Mine said "no line" on the display when powered up, but w/o the phone line plugged in.

It will work. Even the instruction book talks about using these with no landline. I have mine paired to an iPhone 4 and Galaxy S2 and it works perfectly. Also was able to upload both address books to the phones. And the bluetooth seems pretty strong, I have the base station upstairs and my gs2 downstairs and I can still use the handsets to make and receive calls anywhere in our house. Need to take gs2 down to the basement and see if it is still paired up to the base station. So far this has been a great buy.
