So last night some friends and I randomly got on the topic of discussing the panama canal.
I'm curious as to A) how long it takes a ship to cross the canal and B) how long it would take a ship to travel around south america instead of crossing through the canal.
Obviously times for B probably depend on the size/weight/power of the boat... but my guess was that to cross the canal took hours, probably around a full day for the canal, and several weeks, if not a month or two, to navigate around south america.
One guy said that he thought modern ships could go around south america in the time it takes a ship to travel the canal
