Panaflo L1A trouble - help!

I can't seem to get the L1A to work as a CPU fan for my mother board. The fan (shown here) came with an empty third lead (which I assumed to be the RPM sensor wire). I connected an extra wire (from another panaflo) to that third spot to the motherboard, and it still doesn't seem to be working.

I'm confused... I really don't want to be stuck with my super LOUD thermaltake smartfan. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Edit: Oops, I forgot to mention that my motherboard is an MSI KT3 Ultra.

Try going to your BIOS (assuming you can get that far, when I had a similar issue I was able to go to the BIOS) and disabling the option to shut down our motherboard when the fan dies

yeah, that's always an option. but i want to find a way to avoid that. i want my computer to shut down in case my fan dies.

And by the way, the fan runs, but it just isn't recognized by my motherboard.

Does it have a temp-based shutdown? If so, just enable that, and set it around 10C above what stress-testing will get to temp to.

...if it needs an RPM signal, put another fan in there that will give it one (not connected to the CPU). Unfortunately even though some Panaflos have the third wire, very few have the RPM monitoring...why, I don't know. You could always get a YS-tech or Enermax (Compuman) fan with it that is quiet (or adjustable) and have it as a case fan.

I use the L1As for my case, PS, and CPU fans. But none of them have RPM monitoring.

yup, the majority of panaflos are not rpm sensing fans. There are a couple new ones that do support it, but i haven't seen them around much. Only one i have seen for sale on the web is the 90mm L1A at coolcases.com

Thanks guys for all your help. I decided to turn off the automatic shutoff option in BIOS since my panaflo probably dosen't have RPM monitoring.

It's amazing how quiet my machine is running. It used to be soooo loud with just 3 fans running. Now I have 6 quieter fans, and it's eerily quiet.

What are your idle/load temps? I have a very similar setup and am looking to reduce noise without increasing temps.

Panaflos are quite reliable and aren't likely to just fail on you. :)

Well, it was more like a trade-off for me. My rig (XP 1800+, see sig) ran at 40°C idle, and at most 45°C at high loads. That was with my 54CFM, and nearly 40dba fan that was loud as heck.

Now it's MUCH quieter, runs about 45°C, and probably at most 49°C (although I haven't had it run any games, it's been mostly idle today - the reading is about 47°C). A significant increase in temperature... but nothing for me to worry about, and definitely worth the reduced noise (none of my fans surpass 28 dba).

Can't you just set s/w to shut down if your temps rise to dangerous levels, which is what would happen if your fan died?

You definitely got the fans that are not RPM monitoring. The RPM monitoring fans have sensors and come with 3 wires and the part number will end with the letters BX.

I've noticed something..

I have 6 Panaflo L1As..

4 are made in China, and doesn't have RPM monitoring

2 are made in Japan, and have RPM monitoring

Is it just me or is this the case with everyone else?

It's just you. It's just a coincedence. The Panaflos with rpm monitoring are a distinctly different model of fan.
