Does that mean that I can hook this fan up to a molex adapter and it will work powered by one of my PSU plugs as opposed to the motherboard power plugs?

I'm thinking the 3-pin connector is one that fits on a mobo header (but is missing the RPM sensor wire), so yeah, it should work.

3pin connector will need an adaptor to hook up to your "MOLEX" connector from your PSU. Like Howard said, the 3pin hooks up to your motherboard header if you wish.

If you are going to buy an adaptor, you may want to look into something like Zalman MultiFan Connector ZM-MC-1 ~$3
which gives you 2 connectoinos for 12v (full speed) and 2 for 5v for a quieter fan (and less CFM).

The connector he's talking about comes standard with the Zalman vf700, so if you're looking to buy a GPU cooler you can save a few bucks. (vf900 comes with FanMate 2)
