Hey All.
Im about to get a few 80mm Panaflo's to put with a Fan conroller in my case, and I was just wondering which ones to get: Low, Medium or High Speed. I figure that the highs are the best option, because I can just slow them down with the fan controller, but I'm not sure.

Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks All

What do you want?

If you want quietest possible, you get the lows.

When I play games, i put the low speed ones on 12V, when i go to sleep, i put them on 6V.

L1A's are all you need for case fans. Like Timat I run my at reduced speeds 50% at idle and up to 80% depending on system and HD temps, using SpeedFan. You can use M1 or even U1's if you want but they will never get reach L1A noise levels.

Panaflos have been known to make oscillating noises when they are undervolted at a certain range of RPMs.

I do want quietness, but I also want to be able to overclcok as much as i can and not have to worry about my case becoming an oven.

L/M/H/U - Im guessing that means Low/Medium/High/Ultra? The place Im ordering from only has Low, Medium and High, so I guess I'll go with the high.

Thnx All

as long as you have a good circulation of air and the fans on your gpu and cpu are pumping alot of air then there is no reason to want to have really fast air circulation in your case

yes it will help but not to the point where your gonna be able to overclock higher...

stick with the quite ones youll be happy in the future

i agree with the above unless you're going to be putting some thought into fan placement.. if you're just sticking fans in the predetermined spots in your case, just go with the medium. also if you're worried about noise, cut out the fans grills in the case, they crease a lot of noise and prohibit airflow. i have a 92mm high speed panaflo on my xp-90 and even with the side panel off its pretty much silent.. if you get rid of those case grills than the noise on the high speed will be reduced a lot.

I've got a Panaflo, and its twice as loud as everything else put together. I'll have to see though if the above's "oscillating" is what's happening to me. But however loud, Panaflos are the best. Mine moves 93 cfm (cubic feet per minute), and I bet there are't 5 others in the same noise range that can match it.

Problem is, I have dodgy circulation at the moment. I have a generic illuminated 80mm in the back, and another in the side panel, but these dont move much air. Thats why i want another couple in the front.

Also, i was just thinking about it, and if i have a PWM fan controller attached to an LED fan, thats gonna make the lights flash really fast, isn't it? That'd be more distracting than a noisy fan. I guess i can always re-wire the LEDs straight to the 12V, bypassing the controller.

I can remove the grills at the front of the case, since you couldn't touch fans there anyway, but the back/side have grills that stop me jamming my fingers into the fans. Are after-market grills/filters better?

yeah, just get something simple and as non-restrictive to airflow as possible.. cases generally have big flat grills cut into them.. any generic rounded fan grill will work much better for air flow and help reduce noise

something like this would work great

Thats the sort of thing i was thinking of. But I'm guessing that something that looks cool like this wouldn't be very good though.

What about filters(like this or like this)? Good because they keep dust out of your machine, but bad because they generate noise?...

If I get the lows, why bother with a fan controller. Also, they don't move a huge amount of air.

I was thinking about getting a 120mm, but I have mountings for 2x80mm, and a 120mm wouldn't really fit well, as it would be gettting in the way of my HDD and front panel power/reset switches. I could move all that stuff, but is it really worth it for minimal benefit? Unless I could get a HUGE fan, like a 150mm Panaflo....

if you're going to be cutting out the case fan grills, why not just cut a hole for a 120mm fan and drill some holes? :) however you should be just fine with 2x80mm.. oh and panaflo doesn't make any fans larger than 120mm ;)

for the grill, i'd try to find something rounded to reduce noise. and about the filters, i wouldnt' waste your money on those things, if you want to filter the air going into your case, use an old t-shirt or some pantyhose or something..

Considering I'll be getting a panaflo(s), whats going to be better: 2x 80mm or 1x 120mm? I've had a look, and I'm pretty confident I can mod my case to accept a 120mm instead of two 80mms. Is this the better option. Remember, I want to move a decent amount of air without being too noisey.

The shop i get my gear from has 120mm Panaflos in Low/High. They've also getting Ultra Highs "coming soon".

Low: 69CFM at 30dBA
High: 104CFM at 42dBA
Ultra: 114CFM at 46dBA

The High is probably the better option for me. AU$35! (US$27) Still cheaper than 2x 80mm's though. :)

I have asked that same question and 9 times out of 10 I always hear one 120 is quiter than two 80's. But.....I bought a Superlanboy and the stock 120 mm fans make more noise than my older antec 1040 with four panaflo L1a 80mm fans. Of course I know the stock antec 120's are not as quiet as a panaflo 120. So I'm going to be changing them out sooner or later.

Hey Guys.
Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty sure I'll be going with the high-speed Panaflos, as soon as I get my fan controller.

Thanks for the link Integra, but I live in Australia, and sidewinder only sells to the US/Canada. The AU$35/US$27 is the best price i've found in Australia, and even that is on the other side of the country.

Thanks Guys
