Panaflo 80mm L1A enough to cool a processor?

Specifically a AthlonXP 2400+ mobile thats being OCed to 2.4GHz? Or should I look for something with more speed? I'd like to keep it as quiet as possible.

Hmm really? Impressive. I didn't think a 24CFM fan would be enough to cool a high end processor. Just curious, but if such a slow fan can cool a 3ghz processor just fine, then why do people bother to buy Delta fans that push like 100+CFM air and are as loud as a jet engine?

I run a mobile 2500+ @ 2.5GHz 1.8v that is cooled by a Thermalright SLK800a / Panaflo L1a 80mm fan. I also use the L1A's as case fans for a very quiet rig. My full load temps are around 60C.

Here's a pic

My guess is because they don't know any better.

John, thanks for the reply! Thats the exact system I plan on building (with the exception of using a Thermalright SK-6 instead), and its good to hear that this is possible. However, isn't 60C a bit high? At least, thats probably what most people on this forum would think.

depends on the efficiency of the cooler. thermal right slk series is a good low rpm heatsink, narrow base allows for low resistence flow through. the zalman have the same.. stock speed processors not at the bleeding edge can also be reasonably cool wtih any half decent cooler + panalfo

Most people on this forum are focused around low cpu temps, and in all honesty socket thermistor temps should be taken with a grain of salt. A rule of thumb is that anything below 65C (AMD or P4) under full load is fine as long as you are 100% stable. My rigs are always stable..... 😉

Good question. I could never figure that out either. They also tend to run like 8 case fans. I guess some people just enjoy lots of noise.

Long ago, having a loud tornado-like system was a basic requirement for a "powerful" system. One who didn't have the loudest, most annoying fans were shunned as being an incompetent system builder. There are still some people stuck in this phase, sadly. But I'm glad to see a trend in quiet computing.

it would depend on the heatsink used. long ago when heatsinks sucked (before the widespread use of giant copper heatsinks) you would need a jet engine fan to cool your heatsink because it didnt dissipate heat too well. but now with more efficient heatsinks, that fans don't have to as outrageous.

think about the factory heatsinks and fans, they dont move too mcuh air and aren't even full copper, but they work. i used a panaflo L1A with a SP-94 for my 2.4c and it worked fine. i have details and specs here compared with a much higher flow 92mm enermax fan i normally use.

there is a difference but the L1A can hold its ground.

people like to go all out on their cooling and end up getting those those tornado fans when it sometimes not even neccessary. its the "tim allen effect" lol.. MORE POWER!!!
