palomino??

i'v been hearing all these great things about yet no1 seems to say flat out what it is, is it a processor? if so who makes it, please inform!!

It's the Athlon 4, or Athlon MP (both are the same thing). Athlon 4 name branding for mobile markets, and Athlon MP for the server markets, and who knows what they'll call it for the desktop. They're all the same chip though - just a tweaked Thunderbird Athlon.

Palomino was the code name for AMD's latest Athlon. Basically it's a TBird with a slightly better feature set (people who know more about CPU's could explain the full set of improvements), a thermal diode, & a cooler running core (by 15% or so).

Viper GTS

Well, the mobile Athlon 4 is slightly different from the desktop MP CPU. The physical core is the same, but there are two key differences. The MP chips do not utilize the new Power Now! feature, although the core does support it, and the mobile version does use Power Now!. The other difference is the default vcore. The mobile Athlon 4 runs @ 1ghz with a default vcore of 1.4v, while the 1ghz and 1.2ghz MP's run with the same 1.75v default vcore. Other than that, they are the same..🙂

I'd bet money that there's a way to enable the PowerNow! capabilities on the Athlon MP's. It just doesn't make sense for AMD to make different cores like that. Different packaging, sure, but different cores makes little sense (and I fully understand the idea behind the Duron, so don't even bring that point up 😉 )

I agree, the core is exactly the same, but Power Now! is disabled. I would be interested in seeing some possible ways to enable it. Also, I wish that some of the Socket A mobo's, other than the Tyan, would utilize the new internal thermal diode.

This is from Anands review of the 760MP chipset...

"As you will remember from our original story on the Athlon 4, there are a number of improvements that allow the Palomino core to maintain a somewhat noticeable performance advantage over its predecessor. With the knowledge that the Athlon MP uses the same Palomino core as the Athlon 4, these same improvements are present in this processor as well. The only thing the Athlon MP won't boast as a feature is PowerNow!, though it is supported by the processor."

I am pretty sure that Power-now just needs to be supported by the chipset, and then have an option in the BIOS.
