Alright, been a long time since I've paid attention to processor articles closely, so my memory is not fresh on topics. Hence why I bring a question to y'all.

I use a KT266A board with a Palomino core 1700+. If I bought a Barton core processor (let's just say 2600+), would I get the stock running speed from the processor or would I have to screw around with my multiplier settings? After all, I'm running a 133 FSB and, for what I know, Barton's clock speed would be assuming a 166 FSB.

With only PC2100 ram, you're not going to be able to run anything faster than an XP2400, period, without modding the cpu to a much higher multiplier. But, then again, if you buy a Barton, you not only get the extra L2 cache, but you can overclock it by modding the multiplier. If you're scared to do it the old-fashioned way (and who wouldn't be, right?), here's a link for you: the link.

Just to add, I had to do the wire mod to hit stock multiplier for my 2600+ on my Epox 8k5a3+

Wire mod is not all that hard to do. 5 minutes and a little patience will get you going.
