Palomino or Applebred?

Yeah, I agree with Avalon on this one. The gigahertz advantage of the Duron @ 2.24 Ghz would make it quicker. Not to metnion, the Applebred is a .13 micron processor (same as Thouroughbred). THe Palomino is the previous generation core at .18 micron. I remember these being hotter than the T-Bred/Applebred cores. Go with the Duron.

edit; But I guess the Duron will not be able to take advantage of its higher clockspeed, lack of SSE and it got only 64K-L2 cache: compared to palomino which has 256K-L2 w/ SSE. I think palomino is much faster if you pair it w/ a good RAM.

Erm, I think the Applebred had both SSE and 128KB L2 cache. It was just a tbred core with half the cache disabled, the cache can even be reenabled in some cases. I think only the original tbird day durons had 64KB cache.

No Applebred's are disabled Thorughbred cores with 64KB of LV2 cache 1/4 that of the full fledged processor. They came in 1.4GHZ, 1.6GHZ and 1.8GHZ varieties.
Since they are based on Throughbred they do indeed have SSE instructions.

SSE discussion is moot, both processor in this group have it, only the original Thunderbird Athlon and Spitfire Duron don't have and those top out at 1.4GHZ and 950MHZ respectively.

It would be interesting to try to compare the Athlon 64 3000+ Venice S754 to the Sempron 64 3300+ Palermo to see if the difference really is that great for 1/4 the cache.

Typically High IPC architectures don't suffer too much when they are reduced in cache levels.

Well an initial run of AquaMark3 results in about 500 lost points for the Duron. But it's a new WinXP install so it could be other factors. The most I could get on the GF4Ti is about 19000 anyway.

I will have to see how smooth games are.

Windows seems much faster, however.

The ram in here is junk, if that makes any difference.

It really is a shame that this won't unlock. I've scraped off the entire bridge for the extra cache and filled the area with conductive silver ink, but nothing happened.

They run about the same heat.

The Palo runs 1.75volts on 18 micron

To hit the overclock I'm getting, I have to run 1.8volts on 13 micron.
