This would be idiotic of them. The mobile OS market is already overcrowded with iPhone OS, Android, Blackberry OS, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and BREW. Did I miss any? Only the top three will be of any relevance, for HTC to sink all the development time and effort into their own OS would be a foolish waste of money. They are far better off polishing their custom themes for their own hardware and sticking with Android or Windows Mobile for their OSs.

I agree that they wouldn't have much to gain unless all their software partners fail at supplying an acceptable product. HTC is best to hold off so long as Anroid and (possibly) WinMo7 are popular. If Apple continues to gain market-share I could see HTC trying to take matters into their own hands much in the way Microsoft eventually took their PMP offerings into their own hands with HW partners didn't offer what they needed.

With how customizable Android and Meego are, there's no reason for HTC to create their own OS that's application incompatible with everything else. Even dumb phones can run android, just strip out most of the capabilities.
