My boss just gave me an assignment: Find him the best PDA out there, regardless of price (unless it's astronomical), that can be used to / as:
- cell phone (much preferred feature)
- regular pda stuff (address book, etc)
- Be connected at FAST speed (As fast as possible)
- Be able to connect at almost EVERYWHERE.
(He wants to be able to log into several business systems, contact managers, etc)

Here's what it has come down to. Tomorrow, I will find a place (B&M) or online to buy:

[*]Palm Tungsten T -> $500 from Palm.com.
[*]Sony T68i -> $300 - $300 MIR = $0 from Amazon.com. However, my boss wants to keep his own cell phone number with ATT. How does that work? Will this work? If not, what do you suggest?

Please let me know if this combo is a great idea. He should be able to get online from virtually ANYWHERE in the world with GSM coverage, by using the web browser on the Tungsten T, and getting online either with the Tungsten T wirelessly to a network; or, dial up to an ISP using the t68i, then use Bluetooth to let TT piggyback on the t68i's internet connection. Then using the palm web browser, he can log into any site, submit forms, etc. And, he can sync up with his desktop while he is in our company wireless network, right?

Am I right, or dead wrong???

PLEASE tell me if I am right or wrong. This could be a disaster for me if what I intend to do is impossible. I have done some research, but want to hear some reviews straightup if anyone here has experience.

Please give any suggestions at all. Where to buy? What other alternatives? What pitfalls? What kind of subscription will he need besides cellular service for the phone? What accesories (bluetooth, yummy) do you suggest getting? ANYTHING, ANYTHING AT ALL!

The Treo 300 is a good PDA first, phone second.
THe Kyocera is a good phone first, PDA second.
Depends on your priorities.

You want fast? Unfortunately both of the above phones are running on 66mhz dragonball processors..not pokey but far far slower than the new OS5 PDAs.

I'd recommend you look at what cell services have the best reception in your area.

You may also want to consider getting a Tungsten T and a Bluetooth enabled phone such as a t68i. A much sleeker combo, IMO.

Personally, I own a Treo 300 and love it, but Sprint needs to get off their fat ass and fix SMS as well as improve stability of their 3G services. It can range from phenomenally fast to non-functional depending on how the network is feeling.

Also, be sure to stay FAR FAR away from the upcoming Tungsten W, for many reasons which you can garner from any preview of the device. My friend was on the design team and they were all astonished when Palm decided to finish the project and bring it to market because they all thought it was a huge piece of crap.

Sprint dropped the Kyocera 7135, which made me pretty pissed. I really need a PDA phone and I'm tempted to buy another 6035. I sold that one in hopes of getting a 7135.

End of discussion. :D

LOL I knew it was only a matter of time before the Canadian Blackberry zealots entered this thread :D

Hey, I gotta stick up for my hometown company... :D

Besides, the Blackberry wipes the floor with the other PDA/Phone combos out there.

What made them decide to drop the 7135? I know Sprint hates customers, but this is pretty extreme.

Wow... I didn't know there were so many others out there besides the Handspring Treo.

I checked out the Treo 300, but didn't like it that much... it just felt rather bulky, and more a PDA than a phone (as someone mentioned above).

So, so far the candidates are:
- Kyocera 7135 - Who's carrying this anyway???? I have yet to find anywhere that sells this, and don't even know who carries it.
- Blackberry 6750 - What is this??? It looks too wide to fit inside pants pocket... Anyone here ever used this? Who carries it? Specs look pretty good, but how does it compare to the others?
- Handspring Treo 300 - Probably most common in this list.
- Tungsten T and SonyEricsson t68i - What is Tungsten T? I know the T68i is a sweet phone though.

Is it better to get a separate small phone, like the T68i, and then get a separate PDA? Or are the "combos" in this list good enough?

I'm in Pittsburgh, PA. I didn't mention that because I wanted something that would work just about anywhere. We do have all the major carriers here, and the services seem to be comparable to each other.

Main concern again, is that it must be able to connect to the Web at FAST speed, wirelessly as well as networked.

GUYS!

Here's what it has come down to:

Tomorrow, I will find a place (B&M) or online to buy:

[*]Sony T68i -> $300 - $300 MIR = $0 from Amazon.com. However, my boss wants to keep his own cell phone number with ATT. How does that work? Will this work? If not, what do you suggest?

Reason I pick this over Treo and Kyocera: Both are great products, but I feel like the Treo is a bit bulky as a phone, and the Kyocera is not great as a PDA. Also I couldn't find the Kyocera sold anywhere.

Please let me know if this combo is a great idea. He should be able to get online from virtually ANYWHERE in the world with GSM coverage, by using the web browser on the Tungsten T, and getting online either with the Tungsten T wirelessly to a network, or dialing to an ISP using the t68i. Then using the palm web browser, he can log into any site, submit forms, etc. And, he can sync up with his desktop while he is in our company wireless network, right?

Am I right, or dead wrong???

Perhaps I'm not understanding something, but you decided to buy a pda + phone instead of the Treo because you felt the Treo was too bulky? Won't carrying around two devices be that much bulkier?

I agree with you though. I think the Treo is too bulky to carry around like I do my cell phone.

There are a few things that I don't like about the Treo. It's oily after u use it as a phone because it touches ur face. (same as kyocera i think). And at times when u just need a phone, the t68i is awesome. At times when u just need a PDA, the TT is awesome as well. Both are also very small, easy to carry either in pockets or briefcase.

Any other suggestions?

Wow, the nokia communicator is AWESOME. Have to check it out more.

Tomorrow is my deadline, please give me any suggestions/ advice u can. Thanks.

Well.... Turns out I haven't bought it yet. Boss was too busy today... and after several more hours of research, and talking on the phone with various sales and tech people... I decided to not recommend anything for now.

The TT and t68i combo is popular and works well, as long as you're in the gsm network. However, most places don't have GSM coverage yet.

I'm so worn out from trying to find the best solution for this. :(
