This one is still very much a rumor, but PreCentral is reporting that it's heard from a "very reliable tipster" who says that Palm is prepping a new phone codenamed "Mansion," which may or may not be the same device that recently turned up in a certification database under the name P102. The real kicker, however, is that the phone is supposedly a touchscreen-only device, and that the screen is said to boast a fairly high 800 x 480 resolution -- no word on screen size, unfortunately. Not much more than that to go on at the moment, but the "Mansion" codename itself does at least make a bit of sense -- as a PreCentral commenter has noted, the Pre was originally codenamed "Castle."

I really hope to hell they're working on a new phone since it's been so damn long since the Pre came out and I hope it's good. WebOS doesn't need to be on any damn printers, it needs a good phone.

Yeah, I'm sure they are...but I'm not holding my breath. HPalm has been too silent for too long to stir much energy out of me at this point. I fear the dev community feels the same way.

Wasn't there some rumblings(whimpers?) of WebOS 2.0 a while back? WebOS is nice, but I have considerable doubt in HP's ability to pull a decent product out of it.

I can't remember the last time I saw anything innovative with an HP logo on it...

With an HP logo... not so sure. But after they acquired Voodoo, the short lived Envy 133 had some nice innovations in it. The one that stands out was the wifi router built into the power brick. You would run ethernet into the brick and it would get transmitted wirelessly. The Envy 133 was targeted as a MacBook Air competitor, so it was crazy thin and light on ports (still had more than the MBA) and so they did that so they didn't have to cram an ethernet port onto the machine.

I think we're finally going to be hearing a lot about new WebOS products. With finally being the key word in that sentence.

My launch day Pre is starting to fall apart (dropping it repeatedly may have something to do with that of course). Need new WebOS phone, stat!

There has to be some good business reason why HP acquired Palm. The smart phone business is forecasted to grow beyond current computer hardware in the next two years. Ergo, such a development makes good business sense.

I'm hoping they release some solid hardware. I love WebOS - its my favorite mobile OS on the market right now. The Pre just really held it back...which is a shame, because I'm a big fan of the portrait slider form factor. Maybe early 2011 will show us something.

I'm sure they've been prepping hardware for a while. They've just been busy replacing all the palm employees who have been fleeing. That takes a while. It will probably take a few more months, though, because now it's time for the suits in HP to ruin the product.

they've pumped in 200 employees into palm. they are no doubt working on something, dunno why ppl think they aren't. they paid $1.2B for webOS, they're not going to let it sit. the guy who founded voodoo is pretty bullish in his tweets about what's coming.

Now, whether or not what comes out is GOOD is a whole different question. I, for one, am hopeful... I want to keep using webOS.

Also, HP has been helping devs quite a bit, the problem is getting more on board. Angry Birds was a nice touch, we got it before android, even tho android was in development first (to be fair, they only had two phones to contend with, and pixi was a two week delay after the pre).

As for the printers... I actually don't think it's a half bad idea. At least, the conceptual navigation anyway. Is it worth the effort? I dunno about that. But I would love to not have to dig through button menus and instead just swipe through cards. But again, it'd be a vastly scaled down version. Though, I'm talking more from the standpoint of many optioned networked multifunction printers....

WebOS 2.0 mixed with good hardware and this phone might actually sell. I don't think the general public really knows what Palm went through, and they don't care too much either. If a phone is "new" to them, they'll buy it.

I'm not so sure it is going to sell well though.
