Does anyone have any experience of the Palit Geforce GTX 460 Sonic in regard to how noisey it is? Mine was always a bit noisey but it's got worse, I heard about a Bios update or something to make it quieter but can't find one for a Palit Geforce GTX 460 Sonic video card only the Palit Geforce GTX 460 Sonic Platinum. I don't care about temperature I just want my video cards quiet. ;)

I had a Palit 2GB 460 that screamed at anything above 30% fan speed. I've read a few honest reviews of Palit's OCd cards, and they are often found to be pretty loud; It's a shame, as I like the professional looks of the sonic platinum 570; looks like a Quadro, but X-Bit said it was noisy.

My understanding is Palit's are loud, period, but loud is relative... my rigs fold at night, and I used to hear the Palit card's high-pitched whining through a solid-core door at 2am. I RMAd the card once due to the noise, and the replacement was an exact match.

As an endnote, I had Palit's low-profile double-wide GTS450 in a den HTPC. It wasn't just loud... it was "Jesus Christ what is that fu*king Delta/hair-dryer noise??!!.

Good luck with that company... MSI, EVGA and Sapphire are successful for a reason.

Dust?
Better buy an aftermarket cooler like arctic cooler if you want it to be quiet. I dont use any of their coolers but planning to get two of them for 460 sli, have been looking at reviews they seem to perform a lot better than stock coolers at lower noise level. Dont know about warranty though, on my pny card i dont have to remove any stickers to remove the cooler.

Are you using card with 1 or 2 dvi connectors? The one with 2 dvi connectors might not work with some coolers because one of the dvi connector could block the cooler. The one that will surely work with this card is Arctic Cooling Accelero L2 Pro, not the best but quiet and cheap. You can see review here

forgot to add, you will be needing 4 M2x10 screws to mount the cooler because the screws given is to short for 460 according to the review. Just to be sure check the separation between the screw holes, it must be 53x53mm for this cooler to work.

edit: list of coolers for non reference gtx 460 like palit and gainward. Some alternative coolers with better performance

A friend of mine also has a palit geforce gtx 460 sonic but unlike mine his is fairly quiet. I noticed that mine must be an older type because his fan looks more like the palit geforce gtx 550 which I used to own and that was quiet.

thanks for all of the tips and advice. I used a Arctic Cooling Accelero L2 Pro with my Palit GeForce GTX 460 Sonic and the difference has been amazing. It is now running pretty much silent and not very noisy like it was before. :)
