If Ted Stevens is kicked out or resigns for the Senate, the Governor of Alaska
appoints his replacement.

Governors cannot appoint themselves, however, they can resign,
making the Lt. Governor the new Governor, and have the new Governor
appoint them.

Or they could declare a special election and she could run ( and probably win ).

No way, stupid mistake and a great way to end your career.

NRO had a list of people who appointed themselves and everyone of them lost the next election.

Plus Gov is FAR better than Senator if she is looking to run again in 2012.

In that case I hope she does it. There are FAR better candidates for 2012 out there.

why on earth would a sitting governor want to become a senator, especially if she's interested in running for president?

I think she knows she can't win the Presidency
Senator is her best bet landing a career position in politics (unless she wants to be a Fox pundit)

Alaska has a two term limit as Governor

So, she could join the Senate .. probably indefinitely like Stevens

Or remain in AK, do one more term, and fade from the limelight.. which I don't see her doing since she gotten a taste of it and seemed to relish it.

It could but it shouldn't. Someone as fundamentally ignorant as she is should be in school.

Not in her case. She has such a solid label as incompetent that the only thing that could save her from it is her serving in the Senate and being able to get involved in the nuts and bolts of policy. This 2012 talk is foolish, she will still be that idiot governor of a small state that cost McCain the election in the eyes of many.

If (more likely when) Stevens is thrown out under Alaska law they have a special election within 90 days to fill the seat.

If he is re-elected the absolute minimum the GOP should do, irght off the bat, is strip him of his seniority and all committee posts he has.

I sure hope the judge considers his absolute lack of remorse when sentencing him for the seven felony convictions.

With the stupidity of Palin and the criminality of Stevens, it wouldn't be all that surprising.

I believe that when the stories about how Palin conducted herself during this campaign come out her presidential aspirations will be greatly diminished.

She'd be better off staying in Alaska so she can spend time with her family. With all those kids and a grandkid on the way, I'd want to be near my family. Washington is too demanding for someone with a large family far away, IMHO. And, as sexist as it might sound to some, it's harder for a woman.

This whole Stevens matter is pregnant with possibilities. (a) All the votes are not counted yet, so we don't know the winner yet. The Stevens lead is very small. (b) The only way Palin even gets a shot at the Stevens seat is for (1) For Stevens to win the general (2) And then either die or be forced to resign rapidly (c) The Stevens sentencing is February, good chance GWB pardons Stevens before 1/20/2009 (d) What the GOP does with Stevens in the Senate will somewhat depend on external factors, especially the remaining 3 contested Senate races. Since the dem prevailed in Oregon, the GOP still could be facing the specter of 60 democratic Senate seats. Which would push the GOP into the Saint Steven's camp. But if Coleman or Chambliss prevails, the GOP may be happy to throw Stevens under the nearest bus. (e) The point is made that being a Governor is better than being a Senator for a white house run, but in this case Palin already has popular Governor on her resume. If Palin wants national office, she has to escape the Alaska backwaters, and the election of 11/2010 may be too late for her.

More national exposure. Senators are in the news all the time if they have policy impact. Nobody knows who a governor of a state like Alaska is. If she wants to run for President or VP in the future, national experience and exposure could be helpful. Of course her problem is that she's just a ridiculous excuse for a politician, but I don't think she views it that way.

Is anybody really surprised by this? Are there people out there who thought she was a serious, mature leader who would do a good job if thrust into the most important job in the country?

Higher profile in her mind I suppose. This way she can stand and denounce Obama in the Senate instead of in front of the Moose Cafe.

Sounds like the fundies are riled up over this:

RedState is pleased to announce it is engaging in a special project: Operation Leper.

We're tracking down all the people from the McCain campaign now whispering smears against Governor Palin to Carl Cameron and others. Michelle Malkin has the details.

We intend to constantly remind the base about these people, monitor who they are working for, and, when 2012 rolls around, see which candidates hire them. Naturally then, you'll see us go to war against those candidates.

It is our expressed intention to make these few people political lepers.

They'll just have to be stuck at CBS with Katie's failed ratings.

Initial list:

1. Nicolle Wallace
2. Steve Schmidt
3. Mark McKinnon

P.S. - Did I ever tell you how RedState was able to stock Gov. Palin's campaign plane with twenty of these?. We were glad to. And we were glad not to mention it at the time. We are rooting for Sarah Palin. Don't make us add you to our list. Do you really want to be next to Kathleen Parker in the leper colony?

In recent times we typically elect govs as presidents, not senators. She enjoys a ridiculously high approval rating in Alaska and should continue to do so and gain reelection in 2010.

Well here in IL there is speculation our very hated Governor will appoint himself to Obama's vacant seat to escape the state capital. He has about as good a chance of being re-elected governor as Palin has running for president in 2012.
