Well, I just got my Alphal PAL8045 Extreme today... Was extremely happy. Immediately went about removing old heatsink (SK-6 with Delta fan) Took me about an hour to get the heatsink assembly fully installed and get the computer back together.

So, I power it on, and nada. I tried all sorts of things: disconnecting everything except video, diff ram, diff video, everything. So then I remember I still had my 1.0GHz TBird clocked at 1.36. Even though this monster of a heatsink should have no problem with it, I set it back to its default speed, and lo! it boots up. So I go into the BIOS, check the temps, and HOLY FREAKING GOD! Its running @ 65 C!!! And then of course it locked up. So I spent another 20 minutes removing everything and removing the heatsink. And then I realize the problem: stupid me had forgotten to apply Arctic Silver. No problem; I apply it, screw everything back into place, boot it up, load into Windows, and now its running @ 55 C!!! Right after MBM loads up, it freezes on me.

So I figure maybe it just needs the extra washer, like it says in the manual. I spend another 20 minutes removing everything, I add the extra washer, I screw only the bare essentials in, just in case I have to do some more stuff, boot up, and its still running @ 50 C!!!

I dont know what I'm doing wrong. Obviously the heatsink isn't getting good contact with the CPU. But why? I followed the directions to the letter: I overlooked nothing. Is there a known issue with the A7V and this heatsink or what? Anybody want to help me out here with suggestions/tips/questions, etc?? Right now I'm going back to my "puny" SK-6, since it actually works well right now....

Thanx

This is the MoBo info. page from the Alpha 8045 website

MoBo Info

There are lots of A7V's, but the one with no suffix has an entry that says:

"Interference Information from customer"

whatever that means ???????

Are you sure nothing on the board is preventing the HS from seating properly?

Yeah, before I bought the heatsink I looked at that page... Didn't quite know what that meant, but since it *was* under the "compatible" list, I bought it. However, I *think* I know what that means, and it is the cause of my problem (I hope): the edge of the heatsink catches the DIMM slot, causing one edge to be slightly higher than the rest. My father noticed this while he was looking at it; I saw it, but did not realize that the two were actually making contact. So, I just spent a few minutes filing down the DIMM slot, and now it seems to be all good. I Just booted it up 2 minutes or so again, and am in the BIOS, watching the temps. It seems to be holding at 34.5 C. Which is much better :) thanx!
