on computer screen, doesn't matter what system.
tv-out to tv either from vga card, mpeg decode card, or consumer dvd player, no good.
our us tv is only ntsc, unless your is multi-system imported from asia.

Get a consumer dvd or vcd player that allows you to select output system, my portable Shinco (top chinese brand) vcd player with lcd can select auto/ntsc/pal output, so I can play a pal vcd on us ntsc tv.
Those japanese brand us model shouldn't have, I'm not sure if those cheapy taiwanese and chinese brand us model have (can someone confirm this issue?)

thanks a mil Kingofcomputer;
just to clarify:

on my 'puter SCREEN PAL will work fine, but not TV-OUT to U.S. Television.

correct?

what about an APEX DVD/VCD/MP3 w/hacked menu? (my friend has one).

Should worked with an Apex, hacked or not, AFAIK, although mine's hacked too.

There is a switch on the remote for NTSC vs. multi vs. PAL.

LuZeR,

>correct?
Right.

Eug,
So it seems that we don't need to buy dvd/vcd player from asia.

With hot deal and coupon, buying those taiwanese/chinese brand dvd player in us is even cheaper than in asia, just not all-code (except early Apex).

Without all-code is ok, since Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan dvd most are code 0.
Bootleg dvd is always code 0.

Hehehehehe...legal VCD....Hehehehehehe.
Sure it's legal.
Try asking Lucas and see if he's getting any royalty out of it....he'll probably confiscate it from you.
As far as I know....only legal StarWars out there right now on a format that is not VHS is LDs and I believe the StarWars "1" is only available as an import from Japan....very expensive!
That's my 2cents

Peace out.

Hmmmm site seems to be down....
read from a search on Google that vcds are from Malaysia....
Hmmmmm...I'm a Malaysian...and all I can say is...
I better go check out the website first before shooting my mouth off again...

As for your question on playing on NTSC dvd player, here's what I know:
Yes - on Apex/Yamakawa/Raite/etc..taiwan manufactured players. Will automatically change to NTSC for you I think or you have to program it in through the menu.
Yes - on computer dvd players....will need a program.
No - on regular US market DVD players like Pioneer, Sony.
Option - burn vcd into ntsc format on your computer with program. Read about it...haven't really tried it.

Hehehehe...I'll check the site out when it comes back up...but being a Malaysian...I have serious doubts!!!!!! Just FYI that if you really want to buy legal stuff...better check with the people with the ownership rights before buying anything. If you don't care....some of these stuff can be pretty good quality! How they do it....I don't know. Hehehehehe.

Again my 2 cents.
Peace out.

<< Hehehehehe...legal VCD....Hehehehehehe. >>

I was in Singapore this summer and they have plenty of legal VCD's there - at large stores like Tower Records, etc. all VCD's are legal. They are rather expensive, IMHO - $15 or so Singapore dollars (about $9 US). Pirated stuff is MUCH cheaper.

Those legal hollywood movie vcd should only be sold in other countries,
parallel import is not legal for music and movie stuff.

us sucks,
you only can buy old model or lower quality japanese brand electronics in us,
also cellular phones.
now it's 21th century, we're still watching vhs in us.
in hong kong, we only watch ld 10 years ago, now only vcd and dvd.

Here are some FAQs from AllVCD website.

Snip <We only sell Original Video CD. Original VCD means the VCDs are licensed VCDs from Asian authorised distributors>
Snip <We do not sell certain titles due to problems like bad quality and heavily censored.(eg. American Beauty,The Watcher, Something About Mary etc)>

Hehehehehe-----once again-----hehehehehehe.

It's legal all right....but back when I was back home, the movies that I saw was cropped to the point that it was almost as bad or maybe even worse than watching a movie like Alien on a public channel on cable..=censored=.

Haven't been back home for a long time but my girl is going back home to malaysia for a holiday. Asked her to bring me back some GOOD CHINESE DVDs like Drunken Master and Tai Chi Master and Fist of Legend (Jet Li version- kick ass!). I know they are going to be freaking expensive....but with the option of getting subtitles, different languages (Malay, Cantonese, Mandarin, English) is just too good to pass up. Besides, watching a vcd, you have to turn off one side of the balance to listen to a certain language on the computer and you have to either go mono to listen to Cantonese or Mandarin.

I love VCDs....but not as keepers. Will rent them just to watch the movie....but will not think of buying them (unless you can't find it on DVD like Aces go Places! - don't you love Karl Mak and Sam Hui together)

Basically....on the legality of the VCDs...I still have a lot of doubts! If the movies are released before they show up on the silver screen....then my assumption is that they are definitely not legit. If the movies are uncensored, then they are definitely not legit also. If the movies are sold in streets, then they are also definitely nor legit also....cheap....but not legit.
As for legality of the VCD, I have doubts about "Asian authorised distributors". Is there anybody in the Film industry that can confirm the legality of this issue so that we can make this matter a close and shut case?

My 2cents.
Peace out.

if i had a choice, i would get a DVD, no question. if i wanted a bootleg, i would a DivX/AVI, hands down. if i wanted a collecters item that is NOT sold in DVD (as in TPM, and the trilogy) then i would get a VCD .

If you're interested in anime,
bootleg anime vcd is a very good buy.
For example, a complete set of Gundam Wing vcd is just about us$35, dvd $45 in Hong Kong.
Here, one episode legal vhs/dvd (any anime) is $20-30 crazy!!!
If you need english caption, this'd be the only choice.
