Painting Plastic

Armitage

Banned
The plastic center caps on the wheels of my landcruiser had most of the paint worn off, so I tried to paint them this weekend. Rubbed em down with steel wool to get off any loose stuff, and then stripped any wax & such with acetone.

Used rustoleum Plastic Primer, which had pretty good adhesion ... just a few fish-eyes. Then finish coat with rustoleum metallic aluminum.

3 of them came out great, but on the 4th, the finish coat crackles as soon as you spray it on!? Stripped it off once, and cleaned everything up again with acetone, reprimed (the primer sticks fine), and again, the color coat crackles.

Any ideas?

Buy a new one. It's plastic, it can't cost that much.

Yea, only $32/each (at this place at least)

Part cc69314B

That's the only place I've found em online so far. I figured for $128 + shipping, I'd try and paint mine first

get a fresh can? maybe you didn't shake the can good enough, and by the time you get to your last one, it is mostly just propellant?

Don't think so. Spray comes out and covers well. On the 2nd try I was only doing that one.

Oh wait ... that's sarcasm right? HaHa
Ever since I started reading ATOT, my fscking sarcasm-o-meter has been on the fritz. Guess I need to get it checked out again

Did you try a second coat on top of the one that cracked?
Is there a minimum or maximum time for top coating the primer? And if so, did you follow it?
Did you try several light coats or one coat to cover the part?
See if the manufacturer has a website and ask them.

No, because the surface is all fvcked up ... would look like crap

Yes & yes

Did you try several light coats or one coat to cover the part?

Doesn't matter ... as soon as the paint touchs this section you can see it.

See if the manufacturer has a website and ask them.

I'll take a look
