So I made pine shelves for the pantry, cleaned and primed them. Now that I'm putting the top coat on, it's not covering, as if there's some oil on the wood. I've cleaned it and degreased it and it's still happening. Any suggestions? MVIMG_20190502_205650.jpg

Was the wood dry? How did you apply the primer and paint? Brush or roller? Did you mix water based and oil based?

A bunch of years ago, I used a Behr primer and, after a couple of days, it never really hardened. Called Behr and they said I must have let the paint get frozen. July in the South, I surely didn't but maybe they did.

Just a thought....

behr is meh. let it dry for a couple days, sand and put another coat on it. you can stick it out in the sun to really cure it, and break down the oils in the wood. the UV helps.

next time use sherwin williams.

I had that behr paint also, i used something else before and after a year the paint still felt tacky, that behr doesn't seem to do that, so far mine is good.

Did they recommend a sealer for wood besides the zinsser, i had good luck with that too.

Probably too late, but I love what I did with my knotty pine bookshelves (total DIY project, bought the wood at Home Depot). I researched shellacking knotty pine and followed it to a T. They are gorgeous and 10+ years later still look fantastic.
