painting my case

Hi
i want to paint my case..
but it doesnt seem to be as easy as it sounds..
from what i have read ppl put multiple coats of paint and then some clear coat.
but then they sand paper the case sometime..
why is that??

could someone tell me the proper way of painting my case so i wont screw up??

Sanding is optional, but it makes the paint smoother(and the subsequent layers smoother).

Sorry, i'm tired, so i'll look for my guide that i posted tomorrow.

Painting in layers is almost a must to ensure even coating.
