I owuld like to paint both my case and monitor black. What kind of paint should I use to paint and get the best finish( please don't say automotive paint)? Also I would like to paint my monitor also but I dont want to take it apart. Is it possible for me to paint my monitor without taking it apart? I was thinking if I cover the screen(with masking tape and newpaper) and did really light coats on it, that none of the paint would get inside the monitor and mess it up. Anybody please give me advise! Thank you!

Not sure on the paint but I do know that you surely cannot paint your monitor without taking the casing off. Also, taking the case off is extremely dangerous as monitors hold large amounts of electricity even when not on and unplugged.

Ive allways used Krylon spray paint to color my cases. For plastics I have heard of people using vinyl dye. I painted a monitor without removing the cover and it was a pain in the butt. I had to be careful about getting paint directly into the vents. The monitor died a couple months later, im guessing that it died from Krylon.

i urge you to take EXTREME CAUTION when playing with monitor's inside.

Seriously..If you have to ask you shouldn't even attempt to do it. Go get a black monitor, that would look cool with silver

Well, everyone has to learn sometime right? I know it's dangerous, I might not even decide to do it. However, if I could learn something new, why not.

Why don't you just paint the front "framing" on the monitor face? That would give you the effect you want an a lot less dangerous.

How do I cover up the rest of the monitor though?
OK, turn it off for starters. Then tape newspaper snugly around the main body of the monitor. At every overlap of the paper, seal it with masking tape so that there are no leaks. I guess you could even do this with a plastic bag (as long as everything is off and unplugged). Then carefully tape off the area of the screen with paper also. The problem areas are going to be the "ready" light and the switches or controls. Extreme patience and a steady hand will do you good here. :D Shouldn't be that difficult though. In fact, I was thinking of doing this myself because I have a few small marks on the front of my monitor frame that were done with a permanent marker. Ugly. I figure I can just paint the whole frame black and be done with it. Unless of course someone can tell me how to get black permanent marking pen off of my beige monitor frame?! ;) BTW, yes, I have grandkids!

Use the BLUE masking tape you can get from Home Depot. Its a bit more expensive but it seems to stick better and come off easier when you want to (kinda sounds odd huh).

Does anyone have any additional info on this material? I'm wondering how it (the vinyl dye) is applied?

Yeah heard this was good, and saw really good results. More information on it would be nice.

If anybody is going to try painting the framing of the monitor please post pics or just tell me how the process went, the taping of button and stuff. Also if anybody has any links to cases painted in vinyl please post them. Thanks

Whoa whoa whoa, do NOT go out and attempt to paint your monitor without exercising extreme caution!! What you do not know, is that just turning off your monitor and unplugging it does not remove any risk that electricity poses. The charge in a monitor can last for months and can easily kill you if zapped just right. Here, read this about capacitors to fully understand the risks involved when removing the casing from monitors or televisions. You can easily paint the front part of the monitor, but the rest of it must be done with caution and brains.

Leafblighter,
Welcome to AT. It would be a good idea if you read the entire thread before posting though. This subject and the appropriate warnings have been mentioned. In fact it has "metamorphased" itself to possibly just painting the frame around the screen, which would not involve taking apart the monitor.
Enjoy AT!

I have some pen marks on various things from my son. :) Have you considered doing the whole front of the frame with the same premanent marker? Weird I know, but just a though...

LOL! I'm afraid I am not that much of an artist. It would end up looking worse than it was. Of course, maybe one of those big fat markers...........hmmm. I could almost "paint" the frame with a few of those. Nah, it'd look like a pile of bovine fecal matter.

First of all, I suggest that you become friends with someone who works on TVs because if you try to discharch the caps on your monitor without the right equipment, YOU WILL DIE. (yes, Buz 2b I have read the thread, but it was never emphasized enough). That said, here is an article on how to get an absolutely beautiful finish on your computer with good old spray paint: <http://www.pc-workshop.net/articles/paint101/paint101-1.shtml> I've done it and it works wonderfully, you just have to have a LOT of spare time and patience to get it right.

Did you really? Look I'm not going to go nuts on this but take another look.....warnings and acknowledgment.
taking the case off is extremely dangerous

death by monitor....sounds cool but not

Hey, I don't want to see anyone die either but let's pretend we are all reasonably responsible and not beat things to death (pardon the almost accidental pun) by repeating and repeating the warnings.
BTW, I briefly looked over the article you talk about and thought it was pretty good. Thanks for sharing that. I bookmarked it for further study.

I've seen the dye in action, it comes out a lot nicer than paint. You can get it at auto parts stores, I think they make it for dying the interiors of cars.

Also, if you unplug your monitor and let it sit a while, I've heard the capacitance electricity will disappate. I can't say that for fact, that's just what I heard.

I pulled my monitor apart right out of the box (turned it on once to see if it worked) and painted it. Brand new Viewsonic 21" P815. My friends thought I was nuts....;)

Geez, another crazy person. You heard WRONG! Oh, it might dissapate, but no time soon. You are very lucky you are here to talk to us. Heck, maybe MassiveUnit has a point; it seems as though no matter how many times you warn people, some still have their head in the sand. :(
