I tried white over dark gray, and this is ridiculous. I'm on the 3rd coat.

Couldnt i use something else like primer? and make it in 2 coats?

i recently painted over the dark brown 70's panelling in my basement. 2 coats of primer, and 1 coat of paint did the trick.

Depending on the type of paint and the color, it can take alot to cover. My record is 3 coats of Kilz(primer) and 5 coats of white paint to cover a mural done with dark green tempra paint.

Yes, that's one of the purposes of primer.
