i dont know any sites, but im sure you can't go wrong with sanding the surface so that the paint will have something to hold on to.

theres the krylon spray paint that supposidly bonds to plastic with out any primeing or sanding, i havent used it yet but its worth a try, says it can also be used on metal/wood/etc.

It's called Krylon Fusion made for painting plastic. You can use that. Just remove the face plate from the drive before painting it.

Where can one purchase this for a good price? I'm guessing not your local Wal Mart, but I could be wrong... Also, what would be a good price? I've never bought any before, but also want to paint my dvd burner faceplate...

If I recall correctly, I did see it at my local Walmart (Nashville, TN) just last weekend. I think it was around $3 a can.

to paint on metal do you have to do anything special like sand off the old paint, prime, gloss coat, etc. Or is it just spray and its done

See what the can says although sanding would be alright. Should bond better I would test on a hidden area first if possible. Can says no sanding needed just apply to dry clean surface.

For the OP: this guide on vinyl dye is what I followed when I colored a couple cdrw drives black. Both came out looking exceptional. If I had to add anything to the guide, I'd say to spray from several different directions to ensure you get all of the edges covered. I had to respray my first drive because I only sprayed straight on.
