Painted my car

It's a 1993 240sx that was white and quickly showing it's age. The final blow was when the roof started rusting.

After a lot of thought I decided to paint it a pearl blue that is currently being used on Nissan Maximas and Altimas.

I originally thought the project would take no more then a week of prepping in the evenings after work and then finish on the weekend. It took a month. (in case you haven't guessed, I'm not a pro at this)

Anyway, I finished wet sanding and polishing out the orange peel and the few specks of trash in the paint today and finally got some pics. Not the best lighting but as the summary says, I'm happy.

A couple of "before" shots:

Now the "after"

"1" shows a lot of sanding runoff that needs to be washed off the nose and "4" is a closeup of the roof.

I did paint inside the door sills and under the hood and in the back hatch area so there isn't any white peeking out when I open the doors, hood, etc. Also a dark car definately shows defects in the paint more then a light colored one. I couldn't believe how many little dents just "popped" up after I sprayed on the base coat. (I went back and fixed them.. part of what caused the project to take so long)

Anyway it's nice to finally have a weekend off instead of having to get out and work on this thing. 😀

looks very good!

Just outta curiosity did you wetsand it at all after painting? Ans what grit sand paper do you use to smooth it down before priming? I have to paint some random fairing pieces on my bike 🙂

Sure did. The clear went on way to rough to call it good so what you see is the result of about 8 solid hours of wet sanding and polishing. I started with 1000 grit (many will tell you to start with 1500) because I had a lot of smoothing to do. I then finished with 2000 grit and polished with a 3m product called Finesse it II medium cut. Finally I applied Meguiars #7 glaze which unlike wax, can be applied to a freshly painted car.

If you look at the bottom of the nose in photo 1 you can see the white runoff from wetsanding.

That is a damn good job. What gun and what line of paint are you using? I'm about paint my car (again) over Thanksgiving weekend. Nice to know there is another fellow car-painting hobbyist on atot!

Ah darn. Guess I've been huffing too many paint fumes. 😛 Now I'm going to be tracked down by every sexual predator on the internet. 😀

Thanks for the compliments guys. It means a lot.

As for the questions:

I used this gun

I rented a compressor that was like this one.

I used Martin Senour Crossfire paint from NAPA (basecoat/clearcoat)

I got a lot of info by reading these forums.

Wow. Paint mine please! 🙂

Had some people dump acid on mine a few times. It really needs a paint job.
