After playing paintball a few times using rental equipment i've figured its time to jump in and buy a gun. :) So i was wondering what anandtech paintballers use for their guns?

Recommendation for bottles, hoppers, barrels markers and any other equipment i will need would be greatly appreciated. i've also been wodnering the diffrence between vertical feed and power feed, which is better? and on most guns wouldnt a vertical feed block the sight rails if i ever decide to use them? thanks!

tippman's are pretty good beginner guns, same with spyder

if you're feeling like a baller, get a cocker or automag

if you want to show your bling bling, get an angel ;)

I have a RT Pro (the mag) and i love it, my friend has an LCD Angel and its sweet. But I dont like electronic guns that much and unlike my friend if it starts to rain i can still play. :D

On the vertical feed vs. powerfeed, the true facts are found on WARPIG's site (World and Regional Paintball Information Guide) www.warpig.com. Their tech, Bill Mills, tests all these questions and found that there is no difference what so ever.

On the gun issue, if you want to go all out get the Tippman A-5, It's light, compact, and has its own feeding system so you don't need a $100 hopper. I tried it and I love it, if i didnt already have my gun i'd probely would chose it over a RT Pro. Moreover, you can use CO2 with a tippman, but if you got the money and are able to fill N2 tanks then get nitro.

Of course you SHOULDN'T buy any gun without trying them first!!!!! Realize electro's are popular but i'd rather use a spider of an angel cause i just hate the trigger of electros. Best way to choose is go back to the field and ask people about their guns, ask if you can fire it (no paint of course); this will provide more info than people can by words and everyone loves to brag about and show off their stuff--i do ;).

Now what mask are you gonna get? If you want comfort get a spectra, trust me there is a big difference from a $40 mask and a $70 mask.

if you can afford it but a Automag. i have one of these haver had it for years its a work horse never breaks and its always reliable. also one of teh better guns out there. i comes with power feed which is fine. you really only need a vertical feed if you have an electronic Gun like a Angel or E mag cause they just shoot to damn fast. If your a beginner player id go with a 9Volt Viewloader revolution. you can get teh 12 volt of you really think you need it. it does make a big diff. best barrels for any gun are either made by Smart Parts or The DYE boomstick. both companys make amazing barrels. For a mazk id get a JT flex 7 i think thats the one i have its nice and conftorable and works fine. other thhen that you might want some gloves gettin hit in the hands sucks. also possibily a harness to carry extra paint. JT makes a 4 POD speed pod one thats great sits on your lower back and dosent get in the way.

Go to warpig.com for any more info you want they also have a classified section if you wanna buy a used gun.

I have a tippmann model 98, with a flatline barrel. It is extreemly reliabile, and I got the feather trigger job on it, and it fires like a dream now. The flatline makes it shoot just over 2.5x the distance of a normal gun, plus it is extreemly accurate. I have a rifle scope mounted on it. :).

the problim with teh FLATLINe barrel is that it 2 feet long. way to long to use in a tournament it gets in teh way. i use a 12in smart parts all american on my mag and i have a 16in boomstick which i use when i play the back man. our teams front man uas a 7in costom barrel on his cocker cause he plays teh point. needs to get quick shots off

Perfect.
Only thing:
You have glasses? If not you should never fog: I'm 240lbs and 5'9" (for the stupid people that means i'm fat) and I NEVER fog with thermal lens...
But if i forget to put my contacts in, my glasses will fog so I got the fan. The fan is ONLY worth it if you HAVE glasses, it stops the glasses from fogging--not the mask lens and it doesn't cool you (its ungodly weak but stops glasses from fogging).

In case you didn't understand that correctly, if you have glasses get the goggle fan, if no glasses don't get the fan.

Luckydragon, Evadman's gun is nice but not worth $150; moreover, you would still need an electro hopper and spider/pirannias aren't good with CO2 at cold temps (50 and under degrees F), but Tippmans are very good with CO2 at pretty much any temp. I know this because I started with a spider TL, liked it but it sucked with CO2 and my friend (who now has the angel) had a Tippman 98* and he was "A okay" with CO2. And the Tippman A-5 has its own hopper feeding system so you don't need to spend the extra cash on an electric hopper. Thats why i like the Tippman A-5 (My friend might get it for when it rains and he has to put his angel away.
Like I said before DON'T get any paintball gun because some tells you too (even me), go to a field and ask around, people will practically throw their guns at you to show off their stuff. I let people i don't even know borrow my gun at the field i goto during a speed ball game (that way i can keep an eye on it). Thats why I like paintball, at least in my area, it's very friendly. Where else can you shoot someone with an obect going about 200mph and joke with that guy 5 minutes later.

*My friend started with a Tippman 98--still has it. But he needed something more compact and could shoot faster. Realize i would choose his 98 over his angel, cause i hate electro triggers.

I agree with BigJelly- go to your feild and try out some markers.
If you are interested in an electro trigger, you might want to check out the package I am selling. The barrell system comes with 8 inserts to match the size of paint, and the back can be changed so it can be used on diff. guns if you ever change. It also comes w/ nitro and if ya want, I can send you a redz comfortbelt/3.1 pod system and turbo rev hopper w/ it for free...

Impulse

However, dont buy it if you havent tried one. One thing to keep in mind is that the aftermarket trigger I have on that gun is fully adjustable, and it has a much better feel than the stock one. If you prefer the mechanical triggers over the electric ones, be sure to try out both a cocker and a mag. Cockers for some are the nirvana of paintball guns, while others hate the feel. If you have the cash, look in to the E-Mag...its an electric gun that can also be used as a mechanical gun, and its trigger is controlled by magnets. (If I have any of this wrong, someone correct me...its been awhile =)
And try to have fun when your playing, dont turn in to one of the jaded tourney/rec players that take everything too seriously...it's never too much fun playing w/ them.
LMK if you have any other questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

well, its pretty evident when you look at it, it isnt a very good speedball barrel, thats a given. I have the stock barrel that i use for speedball.

personally i have the automag minimag with RT valve and CA system (68ci fiber wrapped tank, compressed air)

if you are planning on being in the sport for a while... i would go with the automag... definatly the best out there, easy to upgrade, easy to work on, tons of after market parts, relativily decient price.
