PAINTBALL gun recommendations???

Analog

A friend of mine wants to buy a paintball gun - one with a good deal of features, reliable - but made for someone who is buying their first painball gun. He doesn't necessarily need an AR-15 or MP-5 lookalike - form follows function. Thanks for your input.

I have always been a big fan of tippmann. I have a 98 custom that I'm very happy with but I started out with a pro lite. I would say a 98 custom or an a-5 if he has the cash. That's my recommendation anyways. He should just go to a local paintball shop and ask if he can try a few models out and then buy them online since they are way cheaper online.

I have an retromag and I love it over any other gun on the market. I dont like the feel of electronic guns. My suggestion is either a model 98 custom or if he has the money an automag with nitrogen.
The automag would need nitrogen, agatated hopper, and barrel (also lvl 10 kit to make chopping impossible).
The 98 custom will only need a barrel and CO2.
*Note* the model 98 doesnt need a agitated hopper; however, if he plays a lot or can shoot fast then he should deffinatly get one. Also the custom is what it says, customizible, you can make it go electronic or RT (reactive trigger) with Tippman's products and designs. So the custom could be bought stock and upgraded, very easily, if your friend likes paintball or feels he needs more. The automag should not have any after market parts put in it; unless it is a nitrogen tank, barrel, or hopper (even then those go on the gun).

Tippman (model 98) and AGD (automag makers) are the best paintball companies when reliablity is a must.

All in all, if this is his first gun, then i would heavily suggest a model 98 custom because of the reliability, cost, and upgradibilty.

tippmann is the way to go IMO

I have to admit, 3 of my friends have these guns and they are really impressive! Though I have not used many other paintball guns, you can easily see that it has its advantages...So i would reccommend but this is coming from an un-experienced-with-other-guns person 🙂

Okay, Ive played for a number of years, and have owned a tippman, spyder clone, autococker, and impulse. To be honest, the most reliable one of the bunch was definitely the tippman. However, tell him to be careful when upgrading and this is why...
A lot of people buy tippmans and spyders which are great guns, but then they make the mistake of upgrading them. A new barrel ($40-50), A new trigger, expansion chamber, etc. And next thing you know, a $120 investment is now up to $300-400. The problem with that is, no one is going to pay anymore than 200 on a tippman. So if you are going to go insane with upgrades, you are better off buying an impulse or a better gun right off the start. Impulses have a number of upgrades such as a much lighter trigger pull. However, if you are a casual player, who usually only plays recreational games then a model 98 would be a great gun. They honestly never break down.
I would recommend buying the model 98 and getting a new barrel. Which barrel is up to you. Just remember, 14" is about as long as anyone needs. A rifled barrel/longer barrel does not mean greater distances like it would shooting real bullets so dont go along with that BS. Just get a 14" barrel and you will be fine. The only barrel that offers greater range is the curved barrel that tippman makes for this gun. I do not recommend that either since accuracy is lost with it. It is however your money and are free to spend it as you wish.

BTW, forget about an Automag. I wont crap on his thread, but I will in here...an automag for $650 is absolutely outrageous. YOu can get an excellent vision impulse or many other guns for that much money or an angel which will pummel that automag into the ground. If that automag had the new frame that makes it electonic then it could possibly fetch that much. Do yourself a favor and get a Tippman 98.
