Okay, Ive played for a number of years, and have owned a tippman, spyder clone, autococker, and impulse. To be honest, the most reliable one of the bunch was definitely the tippman. However, tell him to be careful when upgrading and this is why...
A lot of people buy tippmans and spyders which are great guns, but then they make the mistake of upgrading them. A new barrel ($40-50), A new trigger, expansion chamber, etc. And next thing you know, a $120 investment is now up to $300-400. The problem with that is, no one is going to pay anymore than 200 on a tippman. So if you are going to go insane with upgrades, you are better off buying an impulse or a better gun right off the start. Impulses have a number of upgrades such as a much lighter trigger pull. However, if you are a casual player, who usually only plays recreational games then a model 98 would be a great gun. They honestly never break down.
I would recommend buying the model 98 and getting a new barrel. Which barrel is up to you. Just remember, 14" is about as long as anyone needs. A rifled barrel/longer barrel does not mean greater distances like it would shooting real bullets so dont go along with that BS. Just get a 14" barrel and you will be fine. The only barrel that offers greater range is the curved barrel that tippman makes for this gun. I do not recommend that either since accuracy is lost with it. It is however your money and are free to spend it as you wish.
BTW, forget about an Automag. I wont crap on his thread, but I will in here...an automag for $650 is absolutely outrageous. YOu can get an excellent vision impulse or many other guns for that much money or an angel which will pummel that automag into the ground. If that automag had the new frame that makes it electonic then it could possibly fetch that much. Do yourself a favor and get a Tippman 98.
