Paint Removal Question

Just completed a full renovation of a bathroom. Looks great, but for the old door jamb. As I took a look at it to prep it for painting, I realized it's in bad shape. Looks like 20 years worth of quickie paint jobs has taken its toll. There is peeling paint, old drips that have been painted over, etc.
What's an effective way to strip this junk off and start with a fresh coat or two?

For the price you would pay for the chemical strippers/ heavy sanding equipment etc.. It would be about as cost effective to replace the door jamb with a new one.
