Paint is fading and is rough to the touch in one spot. What should I do, if any to protect it from getting worse?

That is the clear coat. Dead and flaking off. Nothing to do other than getting it repaired. It will get worse with time.

this looks like relatively new model. which one is it? was that panel collision repaired? it is quite rare to have clear coat failing on a less than ten year old car.

2005 ford focus... That was my thought as well regarding it being wrecked. Bought used in 2007, so possible though car fax was clean, but know that is not always accurate. Going to be keeping it as it has been great mechanically, and is paid for. Car gets poor gas mileage for such a small car and the auto tragic transmission is one of the worst ever.
