Interesting Portuguese review with Painkiller benches?. oc-zone Even though it?s a DX8 class game it apparently uses a lot of shaders, so the strong DX9 shader engine on the 9600 comes in handy even on DX8 games.

1

The engine this game uses is DirectX 8.1 based but does use some shader effects such as Dot3 bump mapping, water reflections, glass simulation, volumetric lighting and fog, and specular lighting. It also uses a very high polygon count and some highly detailed textures of which the average is 1024x1024 with some going as high as 2048x2048, so it puts some strain on these video cards.

I agree. The same weapons on the same mobs.

The pain and killer weapons are insanely fun to fight with. I like how you can launch enemies into the air with killer and keep them there.

I really enjoyed pinning the monsters all over the place with that gun that launches the sharpened sticks out of it. Good fun!

Huh? My MSI 5900XT wipes the floor with my Sapphire 9600 XT (Fireblade version) with Painkiller!
I kind of doubt it, seeing as how the 9600XT beats the 5700U by 48%, ?and 41% with 4AA/8AF in those benches.

you are comparing high end (5900) to mid range (9600XT)

My MSI 5900 XT VTD128 was only £15 more expensive than the Sapphire R9600 XT which I purchased at the same time. The Sapphire R9600 XT I have is also the higher clocked Fireblade version not the regular R9600 XT.

the 9600 xt doesnt beat the 5700 ultra in any games. They obviously have invalid testing methods. You just have to look at the numbers and see they overclocked the piss out of the 9600 xt and not touch the 5700
The 5700 ultra overclocks much better than any ATI card. IT can easily get 50% better performance. The 5700 ultra I had was as fast overclocked as my 5900 xt is.

How did they overclock a card that runs 500/300 and run it at 500/300?
Yeah, overclocked, yet at stock speeds.

Both cards seem to be running at stock speeds (one site has a normal version and a 'slightly' overclocked version, but one of the 9600XT's is stock).

The numbers on 2 different sites say the 9600XT outperforms the 5700U, why be such a fanboy when there is a clear and explicable performance gap (weak 5700 shader perf) that has nothing to do with overclocking.

Games where the 9600XT beats a 5700U (without AA/AF)
C&C Generals
Aquamark 3
Warcraft III
SimCity 4
Splinter Cell
Tron 2.0
And some ofther games with AA/AF (ie: F1 challenge '99-'02)

Or does Anandtech suck too and have invalid benchmarking methods?

The painkiller demo is available at every download site.
Teach a man how to fish and feed him for alifetime.
Go in your browser address bar and type painkiller. then press enter. Look at all the sites that pop up. That is called in internet search.

My 5700 ultra came with stock 475 mhz.
Overclocked to 600 Mhz. 27% increase
The ram Overclocked from 906 Mhz to 1030 Mhz. 14% increase
AGP Bus 66 mhz to 73.33 mhz 11% increase.
27 + 14 + 11 = 52%

Rather than a Total, you should take an average (around 17-18%) and if you wanted to be annoying, there are far more factors to consider.

A game could have heavy pixel shader use which the card might not be good with, the game may be limited by god knows how many factors and cross-comparisons of the architectures involved is near impossible.

ATI might completely wipe the floor with Nvidia in 2 games and edge them out on 2 whereas Nvidia may be a consistant leader in the other 6 games. The decision then is down to the buyer and the buyer alone. They will formulate an opinion based upon whatever they read/hear and discount what they dont want to understand.

My decision to buy a Sapphire 9800P was down to the opinions of people on this Forum and several benchmarks Id read and re-read. The Nvidia solution comparable to the 9800P at the price/performance level wasnt as good as the ATI solution. It may be a simple case that at another price/performance level, that Nivida beats out ATI. The problems people seem to have with Drivers, Bugs, Game Issues... on both sides and although in my experience, Nvidia has the better drivers... this was not enough to sway my decision.

ATI Vs. Nvidia threads are like Intel Vs. AMD threads (no particular order of company preference). Someone says something that someone else doesnt agree with and then... the thread becomes flooded with flame and sorting out good advice from bad advice is like putting your hand into a bag full of equally shaped, feeling and weighted discs and saying ill buy/use this because it was recommended/similar to something else.

Actually to get a 10% boost in speed from a graphics card, the rule-of-thumb is that you need to increase both the memory and GPU 10%.

When ATI boosted the GPU speed of the 9600pro (400MHz)? 25% ? to get the 9600XT (500MHz), the XT turned out to be ~ 12% faster on average.

Turning up the AGP port will have no influence on the speed of your graphics card generally speaking of course -- unless the AGP is being saturated.
