Pain several weeks after root canal?

So I had a root canal probably 2-3 weeks ago. It hurt for about a day or so, then felt great. I could even chew on it. Just today though, I've started to have pain in the tooth. It hurts to tap on the tooth or bite down on it. Has anyone experienced this? What was the outcome? I'm going to the dentist tomorrow, but I'd like to have some ideas before I get there.

Edit: I'm hoping that it's just some inflammation or a simple infection that will go away with antibiotics. I don't want to find out he missed a canal or needs to do an apicectomy.

sounds like you might still have some inflammation there. did the dentist put you on antibiotics?

I was on antibiotics before the root canal, because I had an active infection.

Good luck, man. Hopefully it is an easy fix like more antibiotics...

I had a root canal but I still had infection. Then I had an apicoectomy. I still have an infection. Now I have an appointment for an extraction. A root canal may not fix what is wrong.

bummer.

there is such a thing as accessory nerves too that can stump even the best Endodontist.

Well, went to the dentist today. He's trying to tell me that it's the tooth in front of it causing the pain. I know it isn't - the pain is the worst when I push in on the tooth in question. The pain is entirely centered around the one I pointed out to him. Now I just have to get him to believe me.

Think you can get a second opinion? WIth all the nerves and such, we may think its obvious that its that tooth, but he may know better.

Are you seeing a regular dentist for this or one who specializes in root canals, an endodontist?

Looks like he is a DDS.

If you aren't getting satisfactory results with him an Endodontist is your next move. Ask for your records and xrays to be transferred there.

Jesus. I just ate a granola bar (the first thing I've had since the appointment where he did fillings on the opposite side of my mouth from the root canal) and it about killed me. I think there's an issue with these new fillings. Ouch.

I would go back and have all the teeth removed.. This will save from having pain later down the road.

..I'v had numerous root canals and a few days after the procedure they've been pain free. If the endo.specialists didn't do a good job of completly removing the root it can become infected weeks later requiring more endo work. Go back. They'll prob.x-ray it again to see if a remnant of the root remains and is now infected.

just want to clarify that they remove the nerve, not the root. which, if done correctly, will make the tooth feel different, but should stop the pain.

I know when I got mine, the plastic tubing/string stuff they put in to fill the hole got pushed to far, and is embedded in the soft tissue above my tooth...so that ended up hurting for a good few weeks. It was still sensitive to the cold a few months later too.

Went back this morning. He put a sedative filling in #14 (#15 is the one that hurts). I also wasn't numb at all when he removed the filling from #14 and placed the new one (ouch). Guess I'll give it a few weeks before I go back and tell him it didn't fix the pain. I haven't tried chewing yet today, so I don't know if the pain in my right side went away or not. Hope so, otherwise it's another day of living on chocolate milk.

Woohoo, the quick reply box is back! Anyway, I'd find a better Endodontist. I had 13 root canals done, and after I was given the first shot of Lidocaine (and subsequent shots of Articaine because I metabolize the stuff too fast) I never felt pain again. Well, my wallet did, but that's another story. I'll shop around for the best deal on everything, but dental work was something I didn't want to mess around with. You don't know any type of pain until you've had dental pain!

He injected me. Guess it didn't work or hit the wrong spot. My lip was a little numb, but the teeth definitely were not.
