Paid public Wi-fi question

I've learned that my state parks offer wi-fi for a price. You pay $8 and get 1 day of access but I was wondering exactly how network authorization works? Do I get some sort of password or do I registering my MAC address with them? Anyone done this before?

you get a key by opening a web browser and paying. that key is good for one day if you are authenticated.

The wireless gear sees your HTTP requests and transparently redirects you to a payment site, from there you complete your transaction and get a time based key.

A bit more detail - Your traffic is going through a transparent proxy server which looks for the presence of a browser cookie. If you have it, you go right through. If you don't have one, you are redirected to the "pay now" site. That site sets the cookie, which is good until midnight (or whenever it expires).
