Paging Yoyo (or anyone owning the Onkyo HT-S780 HTITB

First off, will it be okay to watch a movie at full volume after hooking it up, or is it really that necessary to have that break in period before cranking them up.

Secondly, out of the box I'm sure it sounds crappy in a movie, we plan on watching one after dinner here so I need to know now what the optimal levels for things are as it will save me time from having to tune it right now.

HT noob questions I know, but that's what ATOT's for

Turn it on now and let it play while you eat dinner, it won't be broken in completely but at least you'll get it started.

I still have to wire it up and the g/f made a big meal. She won't be too happy if I skip dinner to hook it up even though I want too 🙂

There's not going to be much "Tuning" that you can do with that receiver. Basically...run the sound check, try your best to balance out the speakers by ear(assuming you do not have a SPL meter). Set the distances. Play something with a lot of bass and make sure the sub is not up to loud or too quiet. Play movie, be happy.

Don't know if you were implying this but "breaking in" speakers is not a process that necessarily avoids damaging them. All it does it loosen the spider and lowers the resonant frequency of the driver. This usually improved the audio quality as the crossover is often designed for this lower resonant frequency.

OP do not worry about watching a movie after dinner, it will work just fine.
