Cheers ;)

Rebuilding a p3 500/320mb RAM/40GB HDD/Asus P3W mobo for my sister for boarding school & the integrated video sucks nuts, so i want to use the s3 Virge DX/GX card, it's currently running fine under 98 (and gives me decent res/refresh rate options, unlike the IGP 810), but i'm putting XP on there for her and i don't know if it will work...

The 810 will run rings around the Virge. If it was an integrated SiS chipset from that era (Sh!t it Sucks!) the Virge may be better.

hmmm, i couldn't get it to go above 800x600 (or maybe it was 640x480) and i couldn't change the resolution/refresh rate with it...but with the Virge i can run any refresh rate the CRT supports at 1024, and enjoy glorious 16bit colour (heck, if i back down to 800x600 i can have 24-bit ;))...

Not this Pete, right? B/c this one's never owned an S3 card. Or if I did, it's disappeared with the other traumas into a deep, dark corner of my mind. ;)

Something tells me your problem is PEBKAC, not hardware. The i810 in my old Celeron box can drive my 17" TFT just fine.

o rly?

i haven't ever really used 98 so this is a steep learning curve for me (running the box on 98 right now, just checking if everything works)...do i need to install drivers for the i810?

The virge card was detected & drivers installed by 98...

YA RLY :p

All cards need drivers, some are just included in the OS with at least bare 2D functionality.

Intel i810 Drivers

If I can play Q3A on them, they'd better be able to do 2D as requested.

Edited for YA RLYness :D

That would have been me. I'm not listening if you skip my R, thank you ;)

The i810 integrated graphics are far superior to the old S3 stuff, but only if you run its native driver. Else it'll pretend to be a 1-MByte unaccelerated VGA, and that sucks.
