Pages on iPad saving new version of document with each save

When I close a Pages document, a new version of the document is saved. That is, instead of overwriting the document, the document is saved as a new document with a version number appended to the end of the file name. The files are stored on the device the folder ends up with multiple versions of the same document. Is there a setting somewhere to change this behavior to only save the latest version and not append version numbers?
