Can anyone who is using this service guide me a bit? I went through the kittywireless forums briefly and also read on AT that I could use a verizon phone after contract? It uses the verizon n/w.

I'm currently on a 2yr verizon contract expiring in October and am thinking about switching to this.

Is this a straightforward thing? Is there some rooting etc. that I need to do? How about porting the number. Are there any gotchas?

I have an HTC Incredible 3G phone.

Thanks,
Nithin.

There's no gotchas or anything. As long as the ESN on the phone isn't blacklisted, it's all good.

Is rooting the phone needed? Is that simple if so?

Yup. As soon as you're off contract and off service with VZW, hop on over to a page plus dealer website (Kitty for example), plug in your ESN number, pay them, they assign you a number or whatnot, they'll give you the instructions on programming your phone OTA (*22890), and off you go.

If you want to port your number, it may be a little trickier since I'm not sure how you keep your ESN active with both VZW and PagePlus (since it's VZW) at the same time.

Thanks Sunny. Thats pretty simple. Yeah I would like to port the number. But its not a deal breaker if I can't do it. I'll have to update my contacts with my new #. Let me read on kitty about porting.

No rooting necessary. Also you cannot use a 4g phone without some serious dicking around.

I have a Droid x on PPC and pay $12/mo. Couldn't be happier.

@Twice - Yeah I read that. I have an old 3G HTC Incredible so I'm good. I'm going for the 2k mins plan. Don't want the monthly as there is no rollover.

So I have info about porting after going through the kw forums. From their guide

"DO NOT CANCEL YOUR SERVICE WITH YOUR OLD PROVIDER! Our porting process cancels your service for you automatically. Your line must be ACTIVE with your old provider to be portable."

Apparently I have to wait till my contract expires, and then without cancelling VZW setup KW and it will automatically cancel VZW. Looks straightforward.

I have 4 phones on PP, and use Kitty for everything. My bill used to be well over $225 a month, now I pay $84. I have 2 on the TNT 1200 ($30 a month), and 2 on the $12 plan for the kids. No taxes/fees, either. Service is awesome (Verizon network), and Kitty's service is beyond anything I've ever had.....

I have a Droid X2, the wife has an Incredible 2, oldest son an original Droid, and youngest and LG eNv. http://www.kittywireless.com

Bring any Verizon 3g phone that was not on their pre-paid list. iPhones and Blackberries are not officially supported, but lots of folks use them. No 4G as someone said above.

If I opt for the prepaid plan, $80 for 1 yr, is there a way to use data on demand? Normally I don't use any data, but I sometimes need data for GPS.
Is there anything like a data card for so many MB? Maybe I missed it but I couldn't find anything on their site.

If you don't need a lot of minutes, and you need medium-to-high data usage, then PagePlus is not very good for you.

I've been doing the page plus thing for a few years now and I can say that gps doesn't use much data assuming you are using google nav. 10 mb is plenty for the occasional gps use every month if you are on the 12 plan.

Consider using an offline GPS navigation app and get the map downloads via WIFI (eg- Co-pilot, Google Maps, NavfreeUSA , Sygic, etc ). You can use data on demand on the PP standard plan but it is not cheap . You can find the rates on the Page Plus Cellular website under Plans.

see - http://slickdeals.net/f/5082750-Offline-Android-navigation-US-maps-Sygic-50-off

FWIW- Although Page Plus cellular activations can be done inexpensively (see fleabay) , you can DIY for free ( for porting only ) at www.pagepluscellular.com .

Also, if you don't want full service from a dealer , you can buy discounted refills at online vendors like www.callingmart.com or www.pindirectcell.com .

More info on Page Plus Cellular here -

If you have a 4G phone, it can take a lot of effort to get data and mms to work correctly and may be easier to purchase a 3G phone. Read threads at the link above .
