Our Exchange Server is a HP DL380. Dual Xeon 2.6's, four GB of memory, 3 x 36GB 15K SCSI drives, RAID 5. Windows 2000 Adv Svr.

I think it's fast enough...but I'm not in charge of ordering/replacing hardware anyway. I just "do."

But your problem was with storage not the speed of your system.

Semi-true. The REAL problem was that one of my coworkers left Perfmon running. No matter how much storage that box has/had, it would've filled up eventually.

MichaelD: I feel for you dude. Even though I'm not a sysadmin, I still carry a pager to support a web application. The app is pretty stable, but since it interfaces with lots of systems, those are the ones that are giving the problems along with stupid "misconfiguration" problems with the servers (Solaris) and of coz the hardware failures (it's an aging system; >4 years).

Edit: BTW, don't you get pager allowance? :p

I used to be a product engineer. I'd get calls at all hours of the morning when manufacturing had a problem. A wrong decision could easily cost the company $250k or more.

I've been in R&D for almost 10 yrs now, and I enjoy that a lot more.

Thanks guys. I feel much better now. A little "Mutual Bitching" goes a long way.

And that SCSI card; it was OLD. Very old. If it were up to me, that particular box would have been shot and set on fire years ago...but I'm just a worker bee.

i feel your pain. I too am on call this weekend acutally until the 12th. I have only been paged twice so far, and that was yesterday morning at 5:30 for a process that failed (5 min fix just clear the error) and 9 pm friday night when a user in our call center was locked in a clients schedule. (20 min fix, kill their connection in SQL then run a few scripts to fix the broken schedule)

BTW, when did you move to Nebraska? what part?

EDIT: Exchange monitoring is your best friend. check into it.

Oh, I just finished an hour of TORMENTED half sleep. I was not asleep, nor awake...and I was hallucinating the entire time. :| Dead serious. Evil stuff too. Friends dying. Girls from HS coming back and laughing at me. My truck getting stolen....all my fears. Yet I was not asleep. That sucked.

*edit*
I wasted my twenty-thousandth post on this? I suck.

I hear ya - I did sysadmin / network admin / general computer guy work for a 1300 user company for a couple years and it svcked a$$. I left them and they kept calling me anyways, so I started billing them $250 per hour minimum 2 hours, and they finnaly stoped after paying for some 10 minute fixes.

I have pills that I can pop to make me sleep. No, not tranqs or sleepers. I have Flexeril, for my back. Little tiny yellow pills. Guaranteed that if I take two, w/i an hour, I'll be out for 12 hours. But what if they page me b/t now and then? I might not wake up and if I do I might kill myself (or someone else) driving into work. I couldn't live with myself. But then again, if I was dead...I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Hmm.

Sorry to hear about all the paging and sleepless nights. I left that shiat behind when I left the world of plant engineering behind for nuclear physics. I live 38 miles away from the lab I work at and they always call someone who lives closer when they really need help. :D

Luckily, pager duty rotates every week. I was unfortunate enough to have it over what is arguably the coolest 3-day holiday weekend ever. :(

We have about....6 or 7 people that pager duty rotates around, so I only get it about every 6-7 weeks. Still going to be too often for my tastes.

Now, If I got paid overtime? I'd VOLUNTEER for pager duty constantly. Money, money, money...life's only treasure.

One 16oz cup of coffee and a washed truck later...I'm awake. I will not be motorcycling today though. Don't want to tempt the fates...

I have the same problem at work, i was on call last week and it was brutal. We have support guys to take a look at the problem first before we get paged and most of the time they can figure out the problem and solve it. BUt last week we had way too many problems and i was paged pretty severly.

what a pain in the ass. as far as sleep goes if i was up all night i just sleep in, and if anyone gives me lip i punch them in their face and then go back to sleep.

I have a 9 month old who wakes up in the middle of the night several times every night. Despite our best efforts, and our doctors, we cannot get my beloved daughter to sleep all the way through. About 50% of the time, I get 5 hours of sleep. The other 50%, I get probably 3-4. And most of the time, I sleep max 2 hours straight in a stretch. And this is after sleeping a total of 5 hours the first WEEK she was born, due to complications.

So let's see, 9 months of irregular sleep versus two days.... I WIN!!

:p :D

P.S. : And at least you get paid for your troubles!

That's nothing compared to my pager carrying schedule. We carry them in a 4 month rotation :)
