On 8 December, I posted a glowing praise of my upgrade from WIN 7 Home Premium to WIN 8 Pro. It was glowing because it went slick as can be and I seemed to have everything I had in WIN 7 immediately available on metro through metro or through the metro jump to my WIN7 desktop.
Thrilled I began exploring the system and discovered that I had the media player as part of my WIN8 Pro DVD load. That was especially good because I have a large number of educational programs as video downloads and the absence of a media player meant no access to those programs. Using the upper right corner touch/swipe/click access panel I began looking at WIN 8 settings and other available info. Somewhere in the change PC settings window I saw a message that my system was not operating optimally and I could refresh the operating system to improve system operation. Good I thought, the better, the better. It asked me to insert the DVD (program media) and hit refresh. After what I thought was an unusual amount of time and drive action the computer restarted and lo and behold all of my WIN7 info was gone.
I could still access my old win7 desktop but all the program shortcut icons were no where
to be seen. Uh OHHHH. I messed up royally. What I probably did was not pay attention to what I was doing. I see now that there are two choices available for system refresh. One refreshes and keeps all your files an settings - the other takes your system back to ground zero - a base WIN8 Pro machine.
I tried to access my backup drive and got a big no backup of WIN7 stuff to WIN8 machine.
I kept trying and eventually was able to locate and backup to my win7 Desktop page a system backup from about a week or two ago. Luckily all the video info was on the D drive which I was able to access again - I couldn't from the base metro page (or didn't know how to). And a great deal of other valuable info was on the d drive. But a lot of stuff was gone and as I thought about it - that wasn't such a loss; how much time do I have to waste playing games from IWIN and BigFish. Can I afford to spend between 5 and 6 hours flying from JFK to LAX in Microsoft Flight Simulator? I was able to re-download vital programs like LOGOS 5, an enormous (between 5 and 6 gig) Bible research and commentary
program, Quicken, TurboTax, iTunes and rhapsody. Since September of 2011 when I was ordained at the age of 75 I've really had no time I could waste on games.
After the panic wore off I discovered there was a folder on my WIN7 desktop labeled all programs removed during the refresh. Many of them could be reinstalled though some could not.
Bottom line? Be very careful what you click on/tap. Now the machine is back to awesome. Everything is clickable/tap-able on metro or through my WIN7 desktop.
Since you already have a Win8 thread here in OSes, I ask that you please keep to that thread.
-Thanks
