What is the best way to pack a computer for shipment via FedEx?
I'd been planning on wrapping the computer case in bubble wrap and
placing it in a large box filled with packing styrofoam peanuts but some
people said that static electricity would be a problem. They said to
use wadded up newspaper instead. Which is better?

Thanks,

I routinely shipped my computer between Utah and Hawai`i as check-in luggage....I would stuff old cloathes tightly around the computer, nothing with buttons or stuff like that on it, just old useless t-shirts (like you get in the hot deals forum for free). Pack it it real tight with the clothes, it's worked nice for me every time, just make sure he person on the other end goes inside the computer to make sure all the add on cards (PCI/ISA) and IDE cables are secures before they turn it on...

that should do better than newspaper or styrofoam peanuts & bubble wrap

use reinforced styrofoam blocks around the computer. Double box it and put the styprofoam peanuts or bubble wrap between the 2 boxes.

If you have a large/heavy heatsink it might be advisable to remove it, especially if it an Athlon.

Definetly remove the Heatsink, ideally it should be disassembled and shipped like that IMO.

I used the foam "frames" that cases usually come with. Then I add foam peanuts or bubble wrap on all sides. Double box it if you charged extra for shipping ;) Oh yeah and don't forget to include insurance in case it gets drop kicked.

Thanks for all the input.

Unfortunately, it's a home-built system so I don't have those styrofoam blocks.
I think I'll just wrap everything in bubble wrap and put in a lot of padding.
