Packet loss on University Ethernet....

is there anything that can be done about it? Games like Counter-strike and Return to Castle Wolfenstein are unplayable.

well, i service about 12,000 on-campus connections at my university, and i can tell you that the packet loss in some dorms is unbearable. i'm talking 50-75%.

the problem with my college is that they put this huge infrastructure in about 10 years ago, and now it's highly outdated...and they just don't have the cash to upgrade it all at once. that, plus the fact that almost 95% of the freshmen these days are bringing computers, the ethernet backbone (10base-t here) just wasn't designed to handle the load


all i could suggest is you call your office of telecommunications (the ones in charge of the network) and bug them...get all your friends to do the same...it's the only way to get things done.
