I don't usually turn off mainstream sci-fi flicks but man I had to turn this one off not even half-way.

Pacific Rim delivered exactly what I wanted in a movie about giant robots punching giant monsters.

And more! I didn't know I wanted to see a monster bludgeoned with a cargo ship but I sure did enjoy that

The monsters were spilling out faster and faster the longer the war dragged on. What started out as a mark 1 every 6 months became an adapted and evolved deadly mark 4 every few hours. The robots were being destroyed faster than they could be built, hence the failed wall solution attempt.

if logic were a concern i think there are a lot more effective ways to kill 20 story tall monster than punching them to death with diesel powered giant robots

But none as awesome.

I think a simultaneous barrage from 500 different artillery emplacements and thousands of missiles would be pretty awesome.

Also much cheaper. And much more effective.

Pacific Rim is a movie where you never ask "But why didn't they...".

The answer is always going to be because the creator thought it would be cooler this way.

I honestly can't think of any situation where we'd absolutely have to build giant war robots to do anything. That makes me sad :(

Cool can be internally consistent. Because, otherwise it goes from cool to "this is really stupid".

Then they would have just had some magic hand waving like godzilla or evangelion where conventional weapons don't work for some made up reason. Personally I don't need a bunch of fake science thrown in my face to justify fights between giant robots and kaiju, the fight itself is reason enough.

I loved the movie. It's mind numbing entertainment, not something to take seriously. I'd love a sequel.
