Pachelbel's Canon in D

It makes me want to have a tea party with Cartman. Actually I agree with some of the notes above. It is a very simple tune technically and can often become boring for a trained ear as it is merely an excercise of basic triad arpeggios and diatonic linear scales played in very simple rhythm, but when the right mixtures of instruments and players ensemble this little tune, it can sound amazingly deep and rich even to the most trained ears as more accomplished musicians often tend to embellish even the most simple basic music with their own improvised harmonic variations as they listen. I still love this tune.

I've never heard anything other than over-schmalzted, modern instrument and modern practice versions of it. I do plenty of improv ornamentation myself when I play baroque music so I'd be interested in hearing a "cool" version of the OMGTACOBELLCANON. 🙂

:thumbsup: Great song! I love the all strings version. I've heard it on piano and with a harpsichord (sp?), but strings is still the best.

Not really. Pachelbel was a master of counterpoint. He wrote a gigantic body of fugal music, and was one of Bach's major influences.

Don't get me wrong, I love overly technical,highly theoretical mental masurbation pieces, but I recognize them for what they are.
Just because something is simple doesn't mean it's bad.
Canon is played out though, unfortunetly.

Edit: I've never heard of Bach being friends with Pachelbel. According to this link (http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~tas3/jpachelbel.html) Pachelbel taught Bach's older brother, but it also simply says that Bach admired Pachelbel. There was quite an age difference between the two.

There's a difference between a great song and a masterpiece. The canon is a great "song". It's a little too conventional to be considered a masterpiece though. Calling something a masterpiece generally means that you are acknowledging the outstanding skill of the creator and the outstanding skill utilized relative to his other works in order to make that specific work.
