Pa. Boy, 13, Scores Perfect 1600 on SAT

Fri Jan 7, 1:27 PM ET U.S. National - AP

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - A 13-year-old boy has scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, a standardized test usually given to college-bound high school seniors.

"I was pretty surprised and happy," said Lee Kennedy-Shaffer, an eighth-grader at Mechanicsburg Middle School. "I did not think I would score that high."

He got the perfect score for a test he took in December as part of a program for gifted children.

He wasn't the first in his family to get a perfect score, but he was the first to do so at such a young age.

In June 2003 his brother Ross scored 1600 on the SAT as a junior at Mechanicsburg High School. The oldest brother, Alan, had 1520 on the exam.

"When your mother is a high school math teacher and your father is a history professor ... doing well in school is expected," Alan Kennedy-Shaffer said.

Wow....not the first in his family either? :Q

I think the most impressive aspect of a perfect score is the verbal part. You have to have a great vocabulary and that is something that takes time and reading. So for him to do that at such an early age is impressive.

I'm less impressed with high math scores-- especially when you have a parent that spends time training them. The math on the SAT isn't that advanced so if you teach a smart kid math a couple levels above his grade, he'll have the knowledge necessary for the SAT. That said it's pretty cool.

Life is filled with standardized tests. Might as well get it down pat early.

I can't believe they did this in a public school system. I thought the teachers at public school taught the gay lifestyle and promoted abortion all day.

No I believe that's what they call "tolerance" and "freedom of choice" in public schools. Those libruhls are really clever about indoctrinating the young. Same with the media.
