P965 instead of P35?

Is it smart to get the p965 chipset now, eventhough the p35 is what everybody is getting. I don't overclock that much and I don't game much either, just BF2142 from time to time.
What do you think guys?

Whislt imo P35 isn't a big enough improvement over 965 to warrant a mobo change if you already have 1 unless you can get a terrific deal (& by comparison you can get an abit IP35 for ~$70) on a good 965 if you are buying a new mobo I would be looking at P35 rather than 965.

What is your choice of CPU and how often do you upgrade? Also, what other parts do you already have? I know everyone's looking/waiting for P965/P35/X38,

Other than the weird position of power connectors, it's an extremely solid and fast board, which has no problem reaching up to ~450FSB under 1066 strap. Unbeatable feature sets (Optical, S/PDIF out, E-SATA, and flexible PEG configuration - you can use the 2nd PEG without worrying about performance loss) for the price. Granted its upgrade-path is limited, but E6600 @~3.60GHz, you won't need an upgrade anytime soon. Note that many equivalents (such as Bad Axe 2) are still going for double the price.

I'm thinking of the E6750, if not, it would be those cheap ones with 800 fsb, i.e. E4400. I already have a 7600GT, just need new cpu, ram, and mb (that's if I upgrade). I already have P4 3.2ghz 775 and 2x512mb DDR400 TwinMos ram ( if I don't upgrade, I'll add 2x1gb Kingston ValueRam).
I had this build for 2 yrs and thought if I upgrade would keep it for 2 yrs also. I don't do much gaming, just BF2142 from time to time. Not too much overclocking either, I only was able to get this to 3.45ghz with no problems, at 3.5ghz it wouldn't get past POST. 😛

BTW, is P965 newer than P975?

Oh, and I'm not from the US nor Canada, I use newegg as reference, I don't buy online. And the prices here are kinda more expensive than those online.

Yes, P965 was released shortly after 975. Anyway, it seems clear that the other posters including myself believe you should be looking at P35 boards...as SerpeantRoyal pointed out...to give yourself the Penryn upgrade path. The price differences between a decent P965 and P35 mobo are so negligible that it seems foolish to forgo Penryn by choosing a P965.

The P35 chipset also has 12 USB ports instead of 8, but of course some of these will be headers on the board rather than "real" ports.

I think the Gigabyte was the highest ranked P35 in a shootout. I would not buy a P965 now, but my Asus P5B vanilla is quad-core and Penryn ready. It will stably o/c to over 525FSB x 7 with only moderate voltage increases. I'm not sure if I would upgrade to a quad or Penryn and will probably wait for Nehalem with a new m/b in a year or so.

Good choice on mobo

I'm assuming you did the TWIN2X2048...PC2 6400 CAS4 or 5 ?
