MB - Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe (Intel Z77 chipset)
CPU - Core i7 3770k (stock – no OC)
Memory - 16 gigs of Corsair XMS3 (2 sticks)
SSD - Samsung 830 Series (Sata 6Gb/s) 256GB
HDD - Seagate barracuda 1 TB
PSU - PC Power & Cooling 910 Watt PPCS910
Video - ASUS GeForce GTX 680

This is a brand new build.

Problem / Symptoms:
Even before I boot into windows if I am in the BIOS setup or the boot selection screen, if I attempt to use the power button to power off the machine, the red CPU Error LED will light up and the system will hang indefinitely and not power off. The display will indicate there is no signal, but the fans stay on and the motherboard continues to remain powered. Even after holding the power off button for 30 seconds, it does not power off. The only way I can power it off is to turn off the PSU.

If I leave the BIOS settings alone, the system appears to be able to reboot okay, but if I make even a single change in the BIOS, it seems that the system will display the same symptoms described above when I attempt to reboot. As of now, all bios settings are default, so reboot seems to be working.

I was able to install windows and it will restart / reboot just fine, but when I attempt to shut down, the same symptoms above happen. The CPU Error LED comes on and the "Shut Down" screen in windows hangs indefinitely. The little circular working indicator freezes and that screen remains until I power off the PSU directly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

**UPDATE** It appears my BIOS version is the first release 0801 and the current release is 1504. I suppose I could start there. Back in the day I got into hardware tuning a bit, but realized it's not for me, so I always feel a little goosey about updating the BIOS. I'd still appreciate confirmation that this is a good first step for troubleshooting given the information I've provided.

I'm experiencing the same symptoms after updating the bios to 1504. I found this thread where someone experienced the same thing:

http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread...321#post143321

At one point I saw Q-Code 03, but now I don't see it. Following guidance there, I checked to make sure that my APM settings in the bios were all set to:

ErP Ready [Disabled]
Restore AC Power Loss [Power Off]
Power On By PCIE/PCI [Disabled]
Power On By RTC [Disabled]

I've double checked my front panel connections to the motherboard and they are all in correctly (facing the right direction) and snug. I then disconnected the front panel power button. (Reset button seems to work). I then powered on the machine using the onboard button and then once booted using a boot disk to a dos prompt, I tried to power down with that button, but still see same problem.

I powered off the PSU, unplugged all drives from the motherboard except the one SSD to boot windows from, then cleared CMOS, then powered back on, but still same issues.

**The one major difference now is that shutdown from windows does not hang. It appears to shut down properly, but the board stays powered on. I thought this might a feature to keep the board cooling with fans on after shut down (it is on some boards), but even after 10 minutes the machine stays running with the CPU Error Light.

RMA'ed motherboard. Just installed replacement and everything works as it should. Motherboard was defective.
