P8Z68-V-Pro, USB3 stops working once a video card plugged in

I'm new here. I am not an experienced in hardware, at least not to a degree I see in other people's posts.
Here is the problem.
I have a new system with ASUS P8Z68-V-Pro motherboard.
As I have a 27" DELL monitor, on-board graphics did not support the max resolution, so I have additionally purchased GIGABYTE GV-NX86T256H GeForce 8600 GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 video card.
The problem, that I later traced to a card, was that USB3 ports worked only sometimes. I could not spot a pattern, not at first.
I got my MOBO replaced, by another one just like the first one.
That time USB3 did not work at all.
I took it back to the store, and USB3 worked there. So, being hardware-challenged person, I just bought new keyboard and mouse, made sure they worked in store, came back home, plugged it all in, USB3 does not work.
I then removed the graphics card, and connected VGA to the monitor.
All of a suddent USB3 works again.
So I installed another card, this time ASUS EN210 SILENT/DI/512MD3/V2(LP).
USB3 does not work.
Both cards were connected to the first (top) blue slot.
Both cards work fine video-wise.
I have installed the latest BIOS using ASUS suite's Update utility.
I have installed all the latest drivers, though it is not clear to me how drivers should make any difference, the USB3 working/not working is seen at the bios stage, before the OS booted.
Since for regular work resolution is more important then USB3, I'll have to install the card back, but I am very frustrated with having to wait longer when copying large files between USB3 external drive and my home and office machines.
Stops working means - usb mouse does not work, HD gets powered but not seen by the system.
Any idea what I should try?

From Asus site:

*1: The PCIe x16_3 slot shares bandwidth with PCIe x1_1 slot, PCIe x1_2 slot, USB3_34 and eSATA. The PCIe x16_3 default setting is in x1 mode.

But I don't think you're using the black pcie so try to plug the keyb and mouse in the USB2 ports and use USB3 for high speed devices, have you tried an USB3 HDD or SSD with the USB3 port?

Edit: ops, just read about your USB3 external. And I think I made a mistake, USB3_34 should be the ones from the motherboard header so the back USB3 shouldn't be affected. In any case try to revert your bios settings to default, try the board outside of the case, can't think anything else right now sorry.

Thanks for replying.
Yes I know about PCIe x16_3, that is why I specifically avoided using it.
I have tried USB3 HDD, of cause, that is what I need USB3 for. But it was not working at all, so I used Microsoft mouse with the red light as a quick indicator whether or not the port is working.

HDD by the way worked fine on USB2 ports.

So I am still very much at loss as to why this happens.

There may be a firmware update for the USB 3.0 controller:
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/renesas.htm
Double check with the motherboard owner's manual for the exact brand of USB 3.0 controller.
Note: mouse and keyboard should be plugged in to the USB 2.0 ports adjacent to the PS/2 ports. There wouldn't be any extra speed benefit to using USB 3.0 ports for those devices. There are no USB 3.0 mice or keyboards available. And may not work for bios setup, prior to Windows drivers being loaded.

Wow. Thats some crazy stuff.
I would have some things to try for you, but taking it into the store and it works there with your vidcard, hmmmm. Then you got a replacement mobo, changed same CPU into new mobo and it actually did worse. I would originaly think you are a serial abuser of the lga pins in the socket, but it (USB 3.0) works in the store - now thats a puzzle for sure.

First of all, since you are new here, you might want to list all your HW in the post, or you could just make it your sig.

Basically any things I post here for you to try is destroyed by it working in the store as you stood there.
So we have to figure out what was dif there.

>The key question is when you took it to store is did you ALSO bring in your monitor or use the one they had on hand?

>Does your mon have a USB hub?

>Is the EPU switch on mobo on?

>Are you overclocking at all?

>Did you bring in your mouse and KB also?

>The second key question is WHAT USB 3 device is failing to run?

>Also: Have you tried the addon USB 3.0 I/O panel bracket setup - the one with the long cord that goes into the blue socket on mobo?

>Do you have USB device in dev man with ASMedia drivers? Saying this device is working properly

>Do you have legacy USB 2 and legacy USB 3 enabled or disabled in bios?

>Are you switching back and forth in initiate graphics adapter in bios from iGPU to PCIe/PCI ea time you are using direct or onboard video
.
Now people post all the time that they use onboard WITH PCIe vid both employed, but my understanding is both cant work in same mobo,
>in other words do you do iGPU WITH vidcard still in slot?

>It could be a sleep issue - have you tried USB 3 immeditaely after boot at home?
>Do you have C1 C3 C6 on or off in bios?
>Do you have EPU switch on or off on mobo?

>In Win 7 Power settings/advanced what setting do you have for USB selective suspend?

>Try in power - turn off monitor/NEVER

Now I have given 16 marked questions here plus HW list request You ignore any and I go away.

Thanks a lot.
I am going to answer your questions one by one a bit later but now the clarification - I can repeat the success of the in-store trial. If I remove the card, connect the monitor to the mobo's VGA output, I'll get USB working. I tried it once, can/will try again.

>The key question is when you took it to store is did you ALSO bring in your monitor or use the one they had on hand?

No, they tried it with their monitor. it is how I discovered what hte problem is. I bought a keyboard and mouse in store, so when I tried at home there were 2 differences - power (I have a ASP unit) and monitor connection.

>Does your mon have a USB hub?
I have 3 monitors, 2 do have USB hubs, but I don't connect them. And the problem persists regardless of the monitor, becaus the 3rd monitor, 17" old samsung, has both VGA and DVI, so I can try it in two combinations.

>Is the EPU switch on mobo on?
Not sure, I don't know what it is. Will look it up in the manual and answer that later.

>Are you overclocking at all?
No, I don't, at least not intentionally. They set BIOS up in the store. I checked and it does not seem to be overclocked, but I might be mistaken.
Is there a way to export my settings and post them?

>Did you bring in your mouse and KB also?
No, but I bought a cheapo set in the store and tried them on and it worked.

>The second key question is WHAT USB 3 device is failing to run?
When USB 3 is not working, no USB device is working, neither my transend HDD which is USB3, nor any USB2 device, like mouse, or SD card reader.
When USB 3 works, everything works.

>Also: Have you tried the addon USB 3.0 I/O panel bracket setup - the one with the long cord that goes into the blue socket on mobo?
I have tried, and the is no success.

>Do you have USB device in dev man with ASMedia drivers? Saying this device is working properly
Great question, I shall answer that when I get home to take a look.

>Do you have legacy USB 2 and legacy USB 3 enabled or disabled in bios?
Yes, everything is enabled.

>Are you switching back and forth in initiate graphics adapter in bios from iGPU to PCIe/PCI ea time you are using direct or onboard video
Yes I was switching a lot, trying to see where the problem is. Now I am going to repeat the test with some discipline, recording each action.

>Now people post all the time that they use onboard WITH PCIe vid both employed, but my understanding is both cant work in same mobo,
>in other words do you do iGPU WITH vidcard still in slot?
No, I could only make USB3 work when I physically remove the vidcard.

>It could be a sleep issue - have you tried USB 3 immeditaely after boot at home?
Not sure if I understand the question, but may be this helps - if USB 3 works, then I am able to see microsoft mouse (the one with the red back) lit up during the boot. THat is how I use it - for testing USB3.
Before that I had SD card reader connected, clicked Del to get to BIOS and in ASUS easy mode could see right away the SD card reader listed. One glance was enough. Now with the mouse indicator it is even easier.

>Do you have C1 C3 C6 on or off in bios?
Don't know what that means. Will look it up and report back.

>Do you have EPU switch on or off on mobo?
Don't know what EPU stands for. Will look it up and report back.

>In Win 7 Power settings/advanced what setting do you have for USB selective suspend?
Don't know but not clear if Win 7 settings are relevant, USB 3 behaviour is observable at the bios stage.

>Try in power - turn off monitor/NEVER
Is that a Win 7 setting? if such, how does it help?
Not sure. But I'll try it nonetheless.

Basically everything works in VGA iGPU mode
Switch to PCIe 8600 card, switch mode and USB dies.
There are four boot initiate options in bios
iGPU (ONLY) PCIe/PCI PCI/PCIe and PCI/iGPU
If you are in iGPU and add the Nvidia card you have a big prob. You have to reboot to bios, switch in bios to PCIe/PCI, shut down/ add card/reboot
You are switching between the first 2 right?
Have you installed the 8600GT drivers?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-275.33-whql-driver.html

Just fwiw:
Monitors with USB hubs are poison for these SB mobo
Multifunction card readers also
You should try a monitor with no USB and reboot a coupla times - things dont stick in the bios until a full reboot it seems.

I always get a non detect KB (or mouse) in bios if legacy USB 2.0 is disabled. The catch 22 is that its needed in bios mode, but not in Win 7

The ASMedia USB must be enabled in bios
And drivers loaded from CD in Win 7

EPU is auto powersave, but there are EPU and TPU switches on mobo - pale yellow LEDs must be off

If you didnt install Intel chipset drivers you wont have any Intel USB 2 either - just MS generic. You can always install them again hurts nothing.

Just for testing:

Even with all this, it still boils down to a dif monitor and KB and mouse WORKS in a dif location OUT OF THE CASE.

Heres are important questions: Did he use
>DVI monitor to DVI Vidcard
>VGA (15 pin DSUB) monitor to VGA at mobo in iGPU?
And now the $64000 question:
Did he have success with nvidia card in? Did you even bring it?
DID you install INTEL graphics drivers for iGPU with its control panel? Without this - no DVI/HDMI

You were switching between iGPU and PCIe/PCI?
Which mode at store?

>You took the mobo out of case and took it to store like that? Well then, try it outside your case at home.
